You need to get your ex disassociated from you. Their credit history may be having an impact on you. However given your income I doubt this may make much difference.

If you are trying to do it yourself and are applying for things you can leave hard markers on your file. The worst thing to do is trawl around the banks because you can leave a trail of destruction behind you.

Halifax probably declined you simply because Santander didn't approve you, which in itself may have had nothing to do with anything 'bad' on your file.
