Goodwill clothes

Two questions:

I bought trousers and they are new and unworn but haven't returned them within 28 days. Can I return them and get refund or gift card?

Also from a different store, I bought shirts and they are within 28 days but I wish to keep them for occasion which is past 28 days. Can I return them and buy them at the sale price? Giving me another 28 days.

Thanks

Unless they are damaged you have no rights to return.

You do have rights to return them for a change of mind if the individual retailers policy allows rather than as required by law.

You would need to check each retailers returns policy to see what, if anything, you are entitled to.

Goodwill? Do you mean charity shop purchase?
    Are you in the US?

So you want to buy shirts for a particular event, then after wearing them at the event you want to return them for a refund?

Is that really what you are proposing?
Looks a bit fraudulent to me.

Both stores have 28 days policy for refund. But my questions are in my original question. The clothes are new and unworn (not damaged).

I have bought the clothes already, the event is next month. I'm honest. Most people buy clothes for events, but they change their mind.

    You are mistaken.

You have no statutory right to be able to return non-faulty items bought from a physical store.

However - as you have mentioned - most major stores operate a 'goodwill' return policy. This generally enables you to be able to return non-faulty items in original condition in exchange for a refund / gift card, etc.

Most stores do allow 28 days - some less and some more. The key thing to remember is that each retailer will have their own terms and conditions attached to their goodwill policy. So long as the retailer's policy is clear and they stick to it - then you are entitled to nothing more.

An example, the ABC Emporium allows you to return unused goods up to 21 days from date of purchase but they only offer a gift card to the value of the purchased item. This is perfectly legal - so long as it is detailed in their ts and cs. In this example, you do not have any right to expect to return goods up to 28 days or to demand a cash refund or refund to your payment card, etc.

That said, while we all like a bargain, it annoys me when people buy items and then want to return them because they have seen them cheaper in a sale. The consumer was happy enough to pay the full price to start with - so the motive can only be greed. Greed sucks.

 Who are these "most people" ?
  • The answer to both of your questions is maybe. You will have to go to the stores in question and ask.
    A witty saying proves nothing
