It's not sinister at all. There's no harm in trying it.
On my lycos account, I am subjected to a full page ad that I have to manually skip if I want to gain access to my inbox, gmail is not that intrusive. If you set it up with an email client you'll never notice.

So while you are reading your emails, you also have adverts displayed that are selected because of info they have picked up while reading through your post.

I know it's not a classic case of spam, but it's pretty much the same thing IMO.

If you're reading your email through a different source it wouldn't be a problem at all ;)

I have several gmail accounts all of which I send/receive via Thunderbird and never need to sign onto the Google site at all :)

I maintain 6 different gmail accounts, 1 for my wife, me, son, daughter, open university, shopping (yes you spammers I know who you are now !!! lol).

(the kids are just little 'uns I jumped in and reserved the names for them)

    Guess what ?
I love Gmail and so do all my other mates / colleagues. :rotfl:
Once you get used to the "labels" facility it's very flexible and having over 2GB storage is very handy for backing up items from the PC. :T

My only complaint so far is that I was refused registration to a forum using a gmail address (they also refuse hotmail, yahoo etc) and as I don't have an ISP email address there was no way round it :(

But apart from that I think Gmail is great! :)

Just to add, I rarely receive any spam at all, one or two a month if I'm unlucky! I don't recall having set any filters so it must all be filtered at source or by Thunderbird ;)
