The ads are like the ones that appear at the side of the screen when you use google for a search. I like gmail and use it as my primary email account, i have the gmail notifier which sits in my menu bar and pops up with any new emails i have. i have never had any problems with spam mail at all, although sometimes i do get some emails i want sent to the spam folder.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

You can do everything with GMail that you can do with any other email account. Some places wont accept free email accounts for registrations but you will still have your other account for those. Just try it, its the best free mail out there (IMHO). If you dont like it just stop using it. Its very easy to use and even better if you use firefox and the gmail extension. Get an account, they are easily available and give it a go. Nothing to lose really.
    Good Luck!

    Cheers NM :)

So while you are reading your emails, you also have adverts displayed that are selected because of info they have picked up while reading through your post.

I know it's not a classic case of spam, but it's pretty much the same thing IMO.

I know what you're saying, but it's similar to the difference between junk mail and billboards. Junk mail is almost always slightly intrusive, you either have to do something to dump it or sometimes its so well disguised tou have to open it to find it. Billboards are something you can mentally tune out without any real effort.

I for one don't even notice the google ads nowadays...

Another use for the ever-increasing storage with Gmail <2GB and rising> is to upload stuff to it, such as backups or any of your stuff that you would find handy to be able to access from any computer.

There are various add-ons such as Roamdrive <I couldn't get it to work> or this one - http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm - which I did get to work fine. It shows up as another drive on your computer and you can drag & drop stuff as normal.

    But not newsgroups?
It would be so good if that were possible as it would stop a lot of spam going into email addresses.

Thanks to all of those above, your feedback has helped me make a decision.

I will give GMail a whirl, as mentioned I can stop if I dont like it. Some of the tech advice was lost on me, ie storing stuff there etc! And I'm still not clear as to whether I keep my current email account, user name, or use the same name etc? Hopefully all will be revealed when I sign up. With regards to the ad I think my view is similar to evil monkey and I can screen out advertising on the side of the screen. Any feedback that differs from that already given is still appreciated.

Maybe my next thread will be how to get the best out of GMAIL!

You can use any name you want. I wouldn't use your real name if I were you!

Sorry if I confused you by talking about using Gmail to store files. Just forget about it for normal usage. It's perhaps a thing for more advanced users. :)

    Gmail is excellent IMO.
I have not had 1 spam item at all from it and the way it organises emails is very helpful.
The best part though is that is supports POP3 and does not require you to dial up to their system to access your email. This is great when you travel, or if you intend to change isps at some point in the future !
