I have a gizmo that allows me to change the maps on my car. I load the standard map back on when I get the car serviced. Compared the the modified map, the car feels like it's broken.0

Cars go through a significant amount of configuration changes in preparation for sale in different regions to meet the requirements of local type approval as well as the tastes of the local market. It's no big deal - manufacturers do this all the time so why would anyone expect them to stick with a one size fits all ECU map (which was the original point).
I seem to recall Ford making a lot of noise about the Focus being a global car to get away from as much of that as possible.0 -

Yes, a focus is a focus wherever you go but even so there are still major changes between markets. Look at the different engine lineup between the US European markets.
