Nationwide New Debit Cards Existing Customers

Nationwide are sending out new debit cards to current account customers even if they haven't asked for a replacement card and their existing card doesn't expire for a while.
Therefore don't get alarmed if you receive a new debit card in the post.*
You need to destroy your old card and use the new one.
The new one has a different number in it.
* If you are an existing current account customer and don't receive a new debit card by the end of the month then contact Nationwide.

Has their security been compromised so badly that they have to issue new cards with different numbers?
How did you find out about this?0 -
There was that case a while ago where a member of staff lost a laptop with loads of customer details on it - maybe this is linked to that?
RSmile, it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

I'm a Nationwide current account customer who got a card in the post thought it was strange and telephoned customer services. In my usual way of interogating customer service staff (since I've been a member of MSE) I asked questions.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I use to use RBS as my main bank and they changed your card number everytime they issued you with a new card and so do Barclaycard. However the expiry dates of the cards followed on from the old card.
If it is due to the laptop theft Nationwide took their time sending out cards as the theft happened in August 2006 and was notified to the public in November. (In that time my card has been registered at 3 different addresses.)
My instinct tells me this is something else such as some one putting customer details in normal rubbish. After all they have been fined for the laptop theft - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/02/14/bcnnation14.xmlI'm not cynical I'm realistic

Just a note on this, not everyone is getting a new card, I had that confirmed by customer services when my partner got a new card and I didn’t on our joint account, it’s a totally random thing, for security measures.:beer:0 -
Its quite normal to be issued with a new 16 digit debit card. The card is still linked to the same account. I don't think this has anything to do with the laptop theft or they would have acted earlier.0

Both my Lloyds TSB (Visa Debit) and Bank of Scotland (Visa Electron) card numbers change with each issue.
I doubt this is related to the laptop theft - why would card numbers be stored on a laptop computer?
Answer is - they wouldn't.

Actually it's very odd behaviour from a card issuer.
No other card issuer I've been with starts sending out new cards while the old card has over a year left on it through normal post without warning.
I've had a card I wasn't expecting to receive stolen in the post before. (They send the replacement card 3 months early.) Luckily the bank, HSBC, contacted me and I had no money in that account.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Err - exactly what were you told? To say that all existing current account holders should contact Nationwide if they dont recieve a new card by the end of this month is a bit extreme. Often, a new card will be sent out where there may be risk of fraud on your account, such as a small test transaction which is blocked and picked up on before it even appears on your statement etc. If you do recieve a new card, always destroy the old one and start using the new one immediately.
As for the laptop theft - http://www.nationwide.co.uk/security/news_and_alerts/ - no card numbers etc were in the laptop.

This is off topic but was in Lloyds yesterday arranging for a 'new' debit card (as a result of an account upgrade) and when she mentioned the issuing of a chequbook I happened to ask if it would be cheque-guarantee card (CGC) also. She said 'no' and that no newly issued LTSB debit cards would be CGCs. She also ventured that this was bank practice in general - only 'existing' CGCs would be reissued. Strange, I said - and irresponsible of banks too - given that people go into shops and write out cheques and have been known to offer their debit cards as CGCs to confuse the assistants. Her only reply to this was that not many shops are taking cheques any more (hardly surprising!).....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0
