O/S Daily Friday 20th October 2017

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need one x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early, DS1 now getting ready for work and DS2 still in his pit. DS2 now has the lurgy that DH had and is still getting over. It seems to be a cold/flu virus, sore throat, heavy cold, awful cough and seems to linger for ages, I know some people that have been poorly with it for over 3 weeks (they are not people with low/weak immune systems either). It seems very much the same as the sore throat/cold virus thing I had earlier in the year, that took me ages to get rid of.

Still dark here, blustery wind again but not cold, stayed damp and misty yesterday right up to late morning, then it did clear and we got a little sunshine for a few minutes, but generally cloudy, dull, dreich and damp.

Dinner last night was a disjointed one as DH was late home, myself and the boys had haggis, mash, carrots, brocolli, HG green beans (me only) and gravy, all eaten and enjoyed, DH had egg and bacon sandwich when he got in. Tonight I'm not sure but something quick and easy with chips/jacket potato.

Yesterday I was reasonably productive, I managed to find the bottom of the dirty wash basket, although I think it already has enough for another load in this morning. I did get some housework done so although it's not a show home standard it's good enough. Cleaned the bathrooms and hoovered all the way through. Also did several jobs on pc and made some phone calls, chased the company to find out what is happening with the shower as I've been waiting for a call back to advise about the spare parts we need and them providing them, spoke to the girl who I was waiting for to do the call back, and she started by saying she'd passed it on to someone else in Sales?! who subsequently wasn't available, it's not a sales issue it's parts under guarantee issue and she'd already said they have the spares in stock and I "could" go to them and buy them over the counter. She sounded a bit vague and I got the impression she'd forgotten what she told me last Friday - but I reminded her and left my number for her to call me back, shortly after she calls back and says the parts are there for me to collect when I'm ready at no cost, so went and picked the parts up and once home rang the plumbing company to get booked in for them to fit parts, which will be happening on Thursday next week, at last, hope this fixes the issue.

So on to today -

I'll be heading to the SM first thing, then home to put shopping away and I'll be doing the ironing, as now there's quite a pile. I'm going to do some baking/cooking of some sort, maybe a cake and some flapjacks/brownies or if I can find some decent and cheap fruit may make a crumble. I want all the jobs done as I'm working tomorrow morning.

Keep safe and well x

nmlc x

Also forgot to add I visited the phone shop as I've been getting loads of calls/texts and finally a letter from them saying my phone deal was coming to an end - I've only got a sim only tariff that I had no idea it was coming to an end, thought it just continued until I wanted to change or buy a new phone. I saw a lovely young chap in the shop and we found a better sim only deal (I'm perfectly happy with my phone don't use it much for internet etc - more texts and so DH/boys/family/friends can contact me in an emergency.) I now have unlimited texts and unlimited minutes - which is better than what I had for around the same amount of money. Win Win.

    Morning Nmlc and all.

Early wake up call this morning, my elderly hound needed to go out and Youngest will be out of bed soon.

Little Miss will be here at 10 whilst Mummy goes food shopping and I shall be going myself later. Won't be needing a lot, just food for Youngest next week whilst we are not here.

Was hoping to degunk my kitchen walls today with the sugar soap I bought the other day but I don't think I'll have the energy after Little Miss has gone home.

Weather is dire, always is when we plan on going away..in all fairness we've left it a bit late. Too much going on at home.

    Onwards and forwards

    Have a great day all

  • Morning folks and thanks NMLC. Bah another early wakening - 4.00 a.m. today and couldn't get back off again.

I am sneaking around quietly as I can't do with the 3 DGDs getting up this early. Will wake them just before 7.00 then let the fun begin! Once they have been bundled into the car at 8.15 for the school run I have the pleasure of the Friday Tidy and clean round. I hate Fridays but I hate leaving the cleaning till Saturday even more!

The moss and algae killer I put down on the drive last w/e has worked a treat - it's gone all dead and brown looking, so I am hoping this afternoon will be fine and I can attack it with the stiff broom. It looks worse now than when it was green!

How does it feel to be waking up a free woman HESTER?! Enjoy the feeling!

Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for the sad, poorly or worried who want them. Take care all xx

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's horrible outside, all wet and windy. Poor Steve has just left for work but at least it's only a half day for him. Jemima and her husband are on their belated honeymoon so we have been looking after the grandchildren for a few days. I am a bit tired now but they have been very good. We have done baking, crafting and shopping for Halloween bits and pieces. My living room looks rather spooky now so fingers crossed we don't have any visitors until it gets tidied up a bit.

Becky hasn't gone into school for a few days as unfortunately her 'good' patch didn't last and she is very poorly again. She feels so disappointed as she really hoped it was all over but it seems to have come back with a vengeance. I could cry for her but she needs me so it is lots of cwtchs and cuddles and reassurance instead.

Phoebe is also very wobbly at the moment but is managing to go into school. We haven't had another appointment from camhs since they cancelled her last one so I will have to chase them up.

Lilly is fine and loving college. She has asked if her friends can have a sleepover here during half term so that will mean a movie marathon and lots of giggling teenage girls :D.

I have already made a bolognese sauce for tea tonight so I just have to cook some spaaghetti and garlic bread to go with it. We have some cakes and biscuits that the grandchildren made if anyone wants a pudding.

Once the grandchildren have gone to their dad's house this evening I will have a go at reorganising my large bookshelf. It is rammed full of crafting stuff as well as my cookbooks but it's also begun to get filled with odd bits and pieces that have been put down on there and forgotten. It needs clearing and sorting out but I would rather do that without little fingers 'helping' :).

Congratulations to Hester on the first day of her well earned retirement. Hope you have a lovely day xx

Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

    Morning everyone

Thanks for starting us off nmlc.

Today I’m going over to my brother’s house to go shopping with my sis-in-law in the town where they live. She wants to start her Christmas shopping and likes someone to go with her when choosing gifts for her friends. I don’t know why she isn’t coming here because we have a lot more shops. Where they live they don’t have large stores like M & S and Debenhams, it’s a small market town. On the plus side, there are some nice coffee shops and she always treats me to coffee and cake.

When I get back I will need to get some housework done. The bathroom needs a really good clean again. I need to do all of the tiles. This week I’ve only managed to get the bare essential done and I do start to worry if the cleaning builds up.

I would really like to get some washing on the line before I go out, but looking at the forecast it doesn’t look like it will stay dry until I get back home, so I think that will need to be hung up in the bathroom for now.

Right, I need to get some breakfast and get going.

Hugs to those who are having a difficult time at the moment or are unwell.

Have a good day everyone whatever you are doing.

Good Morning everyone, and thanks for the kick start nmlc the weather is looking dark and grey and damp outside at the moment so its a morning indoors I think.

Rummaging around my freezer last night I found two small packs of sausage meat left over from a few months ago and a packet of flaky pastry So I think I shall use them up this morning to make some sausage rolls.I am off to a Medway Round table quiz night tomorrow night so that will be my offering towards the nibble ,I'll probably make some shortbread as well as the oven will be on. Saves me going to the shop and buying nibbles at least :):):) any left over flaky pastry will with the addition of some grated cheese get turned into some cheese straws for one of my team who is a veggie.

History club this afternoon and we are discussing the history of gardens .One of the class is bringing along her retired husband as he was head gardener at Hever Castle,so it should be an interesting talk.

Eldest DD is flying off to NYC to see my DGS and his wife for a week, She is so excited as she hasn't seen them since January.

The boys break up this afternoon from school for two weeks so my next fortnight will be a busy one, especially as next Friday my youngest DD goes into hospital for her operation on her foot/tendons. I will be batch baking as much as possible over the weekend, especially cakes and biscuits for the boys.

Hope everyone is warm and dry and safe as another storm id due apparently. My niece in Minane Bridge Eire still has no electric and the pump that brings the water from the well is still out of service, so no showers or flushing loos.!!! She has been told it will be Sunday before things are back to normal

I have a bit of a sniffle this morning so I must wrap up well went I go to history this afternoon.I still haven't bothered to put my heating on as yet because its jus not cold enough in Kent .

Right time to have a cuppa I think

    Take care all

    Morning All

Happy Retirement HH, hope you had a good time last night and managed to have a lie in this morning.

It's been raining all night but seems to have given up for now. Hope it stays dry as I am looking after a year old today from 8am to 5pm, it could be a long day!

Met up with DD yesterday and we went to Costco for a few bits. They have all their Christmas stuff in! Some food shopping then home to take friends' son to Air Cadets. Friends are back today so I have no more duties. Had a glass of wine with Granny last night as she goes home today.

Hope you all have a happy Friday, take care. XX

  • Morning all,

It's Friday!! Although I could of swore it was Friday yesterday.

    Anyway.

Forgot to take some soup out of the freezer to defrost. Can I just microwave it? Hope so, otherwise I have to buy something!

I plan on going a run tonight, despite going to the gym this morning. We'll see.

Hester - Congrats. Hope you enjoyed your wine and night of celebration.
Jackie - Hope you feel better soon.

    Morning everyone,

Wet and windy here in a East Anglia so no chance of getting any washing outside, have the towels and the bed to change so will TD the first and put the sheets on the airers.
Will be off to the yard this afternoon when, hopefully, it will be a tad drier for an hour or so, need to rug Lulu up as it's meant to be colder with wind and rain overnight.
I was later getting home last night so rather than the risotto we picked up some fish and chips, haven't had them for months and have to say thoroughly enjoyed them, I always ask them to remove the skin as can't stand the texture :(
Not sure about tonight, depends on when I get back from the yard!

Hugs to all in need, especially Becky x

Have a good day, take care folks x
