Extremely expensive VED??

So my friend had a freak out moment when he went to tax the van she bought....
£240 for 12 months!!
Unbelievable! Surely this can't be right? On the log book, it says the emissions are '0'. Weird, obviously that's not right, but it's a EURO 5 engine with about 136-138 do-dah of emissions. Yes, it's also registered as a PLG type vehicle. But she plans to use it as a car/camper with no goods or business use at all.
Her van is a 2012 NV200. She did her research and was sure it should've been more like £140?? Where does she stand, please?

What do you mean where does she stand, why would she think she is exempt from purchasing VED?0
-
£240 is the VED rate for a 2012 Euro 5 Light Goods Vehicle.
The VED for goods vehicles is not variable due to emission or fuel type as it is for cars.0 -
She stands no-where, should have asked seller before buying.
Only choice is if she doesn't like it is to sell it.0 -

So your friend is "freaking out" because the tax is £9 a month more than she (wrongly) thought?
£240 is high is but its not "extremely expensive" or "unbelieveable". We've ran cars with over £500 a year VED before now.
I'm curious as to what your think her options might be when you ask "where does she stand"?0 -

Why not? I pay more than that. My wife pays more than double that.0 -

no she will want compensation of course. She did "loads of research" so obviously deserves it.0

When I saw the title and started reading I thought it was £240 a month!
I pay £240 a year on my old SLK that does 1200 miles a year. It is what it is and you live with it or change the vehicle0 -
VED for anything pre 2001, 1550cc+ is £245. That's just the over-time-and-inflation line from what VED used to be for ALL cars before the small engine discount came in in 1999.
This thread just shows how much we've got used to relatively low VEDs due to CO2-test-fiddling over recent years.0
