smart meter in house displays

  • Yet another reason to avoid Smart Meters! And this amuses me:

" The IHD saved me going outside to read my meter. "
Really? How far away is your meter? I am disabled and take all my gas and electricity readings from both outside meters. Whatever the weather,
Good for you, I'm 72 years old with one leg due to diabetes and now have to go into my garden to read my meter because the utility companies can't get their act together.

Wouldn't you prefer to just look at a display in your living room?

Have you registered as a vulnerable customer with your supplier? Most suppliers offer a service similar to what is stated below:

If you do not have a Smart Meter and, due to your personal circumstances or vulnerability, you have told us that neither you nor anyone else can read the meter, we will arrange for someone to come and take a meter reading periodically, and to inform you of that meter reading. This service will be provided free of charge.

But I have a smart meter, BG supplied it, but because I changed to Bulb the IHD no longer works.

Don't worry, I can get my great grandson to go outside to read the meter when necessary, I was being sarcastic in my OP and to Robisere, he's not the only person in the world who is disabled.
  • Hello dhughes462 and welcome to the Forums.

To confirm, we won't replace the In Home Display. This is because they're set up with the meters at individual properties. This work needs to be done by a meter technician and, as we're not the supplier, we don't have control of the meter and aren't allowed to arrange for such work.

    Sorry I can't help further dhughes462.

But if you were the supplier, would you change a faulty IHD? ie, for a EON customer whose EON IHD had stopped working?

I suspect that the IHD does work. It is the smart meter that isn't working - or to be more precise the communications module. The current batch of smart meters will, in the main, only work with the supplier that installed it.

One other thing to watch for, is that not all IHDs actually supply the gas reading in the required units - the suppliers need the gas meter reading in m3 (volume) consumed not KWh

OP, just get over it and learn to live without something wasting your electricity and taking up valuable socket place which would be better used buying a Nespresso machine.
I dumped mine in the dustbin after a few weeks. Why do I need something to tell me how much my leccy appliances are costing me to run.I already knew all that.
It was just some stupid idea some government official dreamed up to sweet talk the UK public into "accepting " a modern superior meter.

but thanks for getting back to me

Your welcome dhughes462. Always happy to reply even if it's not good news. My comments are solely about E.ON though. I can't speak for other suppliers.

Hello SpotlandRules and, generally, yes we would look to replace a faulty display for our customers although the actual way we do this will vary depending on the specific set up at individual properties. As I mentioned above, at the moment, it's likely a technician would need to do this.

Our Smart programme is a work in progress with developments being made all the time. One of the areas under review concerns the In Home Displays and how to deal with faulty units.

For now, if any customer has a faulty display, it's best to talk directly to our Smart teams. They'll be able to explain exactly what needs doing.

Hope this is of interest SpotlandRules.

OK, it works but does not show readings from the smart meters.
