Doing porridge, frugally

Does anyone have ideas to jazz up porridge? I'm trying to eat more frugally, and porridge is really easy on the pocket and good for the body. But, I find it really bland on it's own. I've tried porridge with sliced banana which is lovely, but gets boring. There must be loads of inexpensive toppings/mixes for it?
I've googled, and all I see is super fancy (read expensive) pretentious ideas that nobody would ever do for real.

When you say "on its own", do you at least add sugar, syrup or honey?:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I have started eating porridge a while ago and have never looked back. Used to eat muesli and was so bored with it. I always have blueberries in the porridge. No honey sugar or something.0

Hubby adds things like honey, maple syrup, a handful of frozen fruit - not all together obviously
MIL loves Nutella or a spoonful of Stawberry jam

Just on its own is best. Made on water, a bit of milk around the edges and a drizzle of honey. Or salt if you are that way inclined. Cream on Sundays lol.
Our expectations are heightened to include all kinds of fancy things to porridge, but it is best just au naturel.0 -
Dried fruit, raisins are my favourite. Needs to be Li@l basic porridge oats though! DH and I disagree about when the raisins go in, I like them before the porridge is cooked, DH stirs them in afterwards.
To be honest I shovel my porridge in as I am standing at the kitchen worktop keeping one eye on the clock or at my desk while checking my e-mails so I am not sure I really taste it! This is probably not to be recommended.0 -
I add some frozen (defrosted) berries0

I like the sound of berries. Does syrup not make it less healthy? I thought maybe jam or marmalade mixed in, but those take away from the healthy.0

Peanut butter is my favourite porridge topping0

Yes, plain on it's own with water/milk no additions.0 -
I, too, like it best with just milk and sugar.
You've just reminded me that my granny used to add a sprinkle of sugar to the top and then put some more milk over the top to cool it slightly for us. I used to love that!0
