So for the sake of two miles on the clock, you're suspicious it's not had an MOT.

There's a simple, and cheap solution. Take it for an MOT when you buy it. That way you've had a £40 check on it, and can flag anything that's an issue with the vendor.

When did the dealer fill in the paperwork, did this mileage tally with the odometer when you collected it?

So your best advice is buy the car and then pay for another mot to discover it's got issues?

I wouldn't trust a dealer-issued MOT anyway, but would have checked the car over myself before buying. If I wasn't competent, then I'd get a competent friend or acquaintance, or pay a third-party garage. No reasonable seller will refuse.

An hour's labour is not a big price to pay.

Anyway, the OP had already agreed to buy before this mileage "issue" popped up.

I don't trust MOTs fullstop. They only cover a limited number of things, don't include some very critical things to do with keeping the engine running and the car moving and as I said, are no guarantee of the condition of the vehicle for the items tested once it has rolled out of the test bay.

A car with a long MOT is merely a vehicle with a £35-£55 bill that needs to be paid later than one with a short MOT. A car with a long MOT is no guarantee it will be better than a car with a short MOT or no MOT at all.

Quite why people put so much weight in a bit of paper which is nothing more than the results of an inspection at a snapshot in time that has since passed I do not know.

Check MOT history on line and you will see the previous miles when it was tested etc just to make sure all is well and it aint been clocked etc
  • If it is a 12 month mot, it is a garage mot. If it is less,it could be the previous owner mot. The second case is probably a better mot. There are simple ways to check clutch is not slipping...

Check to MOT history and which garage did each MOT here:

That would be a good way to check the quality of the mot.
