Over the weekend I used a free cash withdrawal machine. I opted to use the £20 button but the machine chucked out £200. I c quickly logged in to my banking app to see that my bank was showing that I had taken £400!!! I contacted the bank put the £200 back in the next morning and now I’ve opened a dispute to reclaim the missing £200. In the meantime I’m using an unwarranted over draft being charged £5 a day and I’ve still had to recredit. I’ve 3 children no money and worried this isn’t going to be resolved properly. How can they take so much money in one go when I only had less than £30 in bank?????:mad:

The cash machine operator will carry out a reconciliation to confirm whether the amount of cash dispensed tallies with the withdrawals made and is likely to have recorded which button you pressed. In addition, many cash machines are fitted with CCTV (or are observed by external CCTV cameras) so there would probably be a visual record of what happened.
Two things: What is your daily cash withdrawal limit on your card (if under £400 it helps) and did you have a pre-arranged overdraft facility (or 'buffer') on the account?"In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Thanks for responding. It’s a hsbc advance account. I know there’s There is a buffer as I’ve gone into an unarranged overdraft before for a small amount like £20 but know idea what the maximum is.
Would a small free cash machine still give that out too?0 -
In order for this to have happened at least three separate errors must have occurred.
The first problem, £200 instead of £20, could be easily explained either by your accidentally typing a second zero (I have done it) or, as has also happened to me, by the screen being out of alignment and the final figure of the amounts hidden so that a £200 button looks like a £20 button.
However, why this should have been recorded as a £400 withdrawal or why your bank should have authorised a withdrawal of £370 more than the amount of available funds in your account, assuming you have no authorised overdraft facility, is another question. The probability of three separate errors of this nature all occurring in respect of one transaction is very remote.
Did ou not ask HSBC why they authorised a withdrawal £370 more than the amount of available funds in your account?
What did HSBC say they would do to resolve the issue?0 -

OP said " I opted to use the £20 button" so doesn't sound like they typed an amount.0 -

Amazing, the amount of things which happen nowadays, truly unbelievable.0 -

£50 buffer (effective from 1 August 2017)

Does the £400 show as one £400 transaction or two £200 transactions?
Has it actually appeared as a transaction, or just come off the available balance?0 -
There should be a limit on how much you can withdraw each day too, often 250 but of course not for everyone, worth checking on this too for your account:A
No, my username is not a typo0 -
Hopefully Reidy84 will come back to the Forum and tell us what has happened.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Banks should probably introduce breathalysers at ATMs and refuse service to those who are high. That might help to rid many mysterious claims.0
