Saving Money in Business Electricity

Setting up a business is a costly affair. Electricity bills consume a large part of our investments. This has been troubling businesspersons all over the world.

Does anybody have any idea on how to cut costs of electricity mainly for my business?

    See this sticky.

Of course that only covers getting the best deal for your utliities. However, domestic advice would also apply to business: fit low energy lightbulbs, develop a culture of switching off lights and equipment when not in use (including not leaving equipment on standby all night), keep doors and windows shut when it's cold etc.

My local council also has an energy reduction e-newsletter for businesses, and I've noticed that some of their newest buildings have automatic movement sensors in all rooms - you go in, the lights come on (presumably only if needed). You leave, the lights go out. Foxed us for a long time when we wanted to turn the lights out to watch a DVD better ... and a bit disconcerting in toilets, I find if the light is slow to respond!

  • Hi there,

I understand that finding cheap business electricity at the moment is a difficult feat especially going into winter, it is important you have a reliable supplier, at the best price over the colder months.

In case you haven't heard of us, E4B are the UK's leading independent electricity supplier for all types of SMEs. Our business is centralised around putting smaller businesses first because the big suppliers often leave them behind. We streamline the way our business is run so that we can offer you the best price.

Whichever supplier you choose, a good piece of advice is to be vigilant around renewal time. This is when the 'new customer only' tariff is not applicable aymore and if you don't keep an eye on your post, you could be rolled over into a long term contract without an expiry date, at a more expensive price - as much as 20%.

On our website, we've got a 'Guide to the small print' which will help inform you of what to be aware of when dealing with the larger suppliers. Please visit www.electricity4business.co.uk and the guide should be at the bottom of our homepage. Also, there's a lot of information on the website, you can even get an online quote or ask one of our helpful operatives to give you a call back.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch and good luck!

We would need to know where in your business the energy is used
e.g in office(s), workshop machinery, process plant, warehousing etc.

Hard to give focussed advice with such a general question:confused:

Ignore echurchill's post as it's spam. She has also done this on the gas&elec board in response to someone asking about business costs.

Yes, be aware of the terms of your contracts.

Business elec/gas customers have less protection than domestics so using a utility broker is a good idea for the smaller business. Larger corporations are used to dealing with contracts and have solicitors to check them.

Be aware that many smaller businesses are getting caught out in the utility sector by their contracts. Whether it be the length or the "out of contract" rates that can occur if you do not agree to a new contract within 14 days of the original ones end etc etc.

Be aware of what you are signing as you can get locked in for a long time (up to 5 years) and Ofgem will do nothing to help you get out.

A broker may be a better person to use as they can search for the best deals for you.

Some utilities will offer you bigger discounts for multiple signings as well.
