CH & SB: Comparison service for utility bills

Options
You can't use U-switch or any of the 'domestic' services Martin mentions in the section about reducing utility bills for business premises, but you can use these people: LSI Utility Brokers

And if you are a member of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, you can get even better deals. Details of how to do so are here. They offer other deals as well (software, mobile phones, payroll etc), so worth looking into whether it's worth joining.

If you use your home as an office I suppose you can still use normal suppliers and the cashback perks that come with that?

As an Ltd, how would I be able to claim an allowance for this?

I can't see why not because you are moving the domestic supply as well.

Are you talking about in your accounts / on your tax return? If you have an accountant, ask them what's a fair percentage. If you don't, I think you count all the rooms in the house (excluding kitchens and bathrooms), work out how many are used for business, and do the maths.

So, if you have 2 bedrooms, dining room and lounge, and you use one bedroom for an office, that's 1/4 of your bills can be allocated to business use.

Myself and my wife run a small shop and, until now, have had our electricity provided by Scottish Power.

Our contract with them is up for renewal on 1st October and we've had the letter detailing their new rates.

I've done a wee bit shopping around and have found a better 1 year deal with E-On / Powergen, but they're also doing a similar deal on a 3 year contract.

I know all the press is about soaring utility prices, but I'm still a bit wary of agreeing to a 3 year contract.

    What does anyone else think??

Our usage is about 6300 units/yr.

    Personal opinion this but no.

When I last reviewed our leccy costs using a independent consultant they told me opinion in the market was prices would peak late this year (hence media coverage re rise).

Prices in wholesale market are reasonably easy to forecast, demand grows steadily but supply is more down to conditions such as reserves.

Ask yourself why any supplier would give you a 3 year deal at same price as 1 year if they expected prices to rise, not likely is it.

I would say 1 year only, but if you prefer certainity over getting best deal.

The people recommended in this sticky are well worth talking to about small biz energy bills.

    Thanks folks.

I phoned round the comparison people who do business rates and they were much of a much.

They were way keener on pushing the 3 year deals than 1 year.

Eventually I contacted British gas directly and they came through with the best 1 year deal - it's not much dearer than I've been paying for the past year, and cheaper than any of the 3 year deals on offer.

I'll keep all the figures I was quoted and revisit this in a year to see If I've made a mistake :)
