Cost redemption for connection missed through flight cancellation

My wife and I booked a flight between a UK regional airport to Edinburgh back in April 2017 for a flight in early September 2017. We then booked a flight from Edinburgh to London which left just over 2 hours after the Edinburgh arrival. The next day we were flying out to LA on holiday. 6 days before we were due to fly I found out (not through the airline) that the first flights had been reschedules and we would now land in Edinburgh after we were due to leave for London. These flights were with separate airlines and had no carrier link. I contacted BA (the carrier for our Edinburgh to London flights) and changed our booking to allow us to get to London that evening. The flight changed costs £248.00 in total.
I contacted the regional carrier seeking this cost reimbursement as they had given no notice of their timetable changes and thus caused the flight rebooking charge. They have agreed that we were entitled to compensation for the flight cancellation through the EC compensation scheme but have refused to refund the monies we paid to BA to rebook our London bound flights. Is this compensation meant to deal with out of pocket expenses to book subsequent flights? or should we push to get the BA rebooking charge from the regional airline?
Thanks for your help.

Which airline is it? Did you book the flight direct, or through any sort of agent?
Airlines are not normally liable for any consequential losses.
However this airline has behaved irresponsibly by not informing you of the cancellation at all. It is their responsibilty, even if booked through an agent. If the airline is signed up to an ADR, you could make a complaint through the adr for consequentials losses. There are pros and cons to including your reg 261/2004 in the overall claim to ADR.If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

I assume the flight was with Flybe? You do not suggest the flight was cancelled merely rescheduled? As such unless the flight was changed by more than 3 hours from the original time, I am not sure EU261 will be of any assistance at all as there is no connection between the bookings at all. This is one of the risks of starting a journey somewhere other than London, frequently recommended on this site, to save money.0
