Retaining phone number

Can anyone explain why I cannot retain my existing phone number when I am only moving to the other side of the village?

A little more info required.
Who is your provider ?, AFAIK, Sky ( and possibly others ) don't offer the option of retaining your number if you move home, even if both the old and new address are connected to the same exchange and therefore physically possible,
it's just not offered (assuming you are a customer of a company that uses Openreach infrastructure)
I'm guessing you are a not BT Consumer Customer because chances are you could move the number if you were.
