Subtle holiday clue in title. We're planning a big holiday post mortgage, ie summer 2013.

Name of a team in the States by any chance? :D

Of course everyone is going to find foreign holidays more expensive in the near future. The pound is tanking at the moment and you're combining that with then having to go in school holidays.

That'll be Crete then. I was taken there as a 12 year old. Still one of my favourite holidays. Absolutely fantastic. Fascinating.

Ok, not big problems, but I can see the bigger mortgage free picture and that's what keeps me going.

Another "issue" is that I'm competitive. What I mean here is that I'm not comparing our situation against anyone else on MSE, but I want to improve our situation year on year - pay x off mortage in 2007, pay x plus a bit more in 2008, etc,

A year or so ago I thought, what the hell - lets try a diary, pluck a figure out of the air and see where it goes. At that time I wasn't really that bothered about achieving the goal.

Over the last 12 months, I've become more determined to achieve the goal. Even if I don't, the mortgage should be a fraction of what it was at the start :T

    Financial Bliss.

Absolutely, couldn't agree more. Keep it up FB, you're going great guns. It can be hard work but working towards a goal is motivational and as you say the big picture keeps you focussed on that.
I think I've disclosed before that I was looking at being MF in 7 or 8 years but that is now looking at more like 34 months due to some hard work and some good luck. :j
I am so looking forward to us being £1500 a month better off!!!

LOL, it won't always last, our daughter has been sleeping in more with the dark mornings, but it was a few years before this occurred; 0500 can seem early on the weekend, but I get up that time every weekday and concur that it can seem like a long day, but just think of all that extra time you have!

...and he didn't go to bed until 8.30 - well that's late for him - he's only 4. Was at a halloween party this evening. Ha, has a better social life than me!

While on the subject of son, we got his main Christmas present today. New bike - 16" frame. Was previously 69.99 but we reserved it for pick up today. Presented reservation no. and was told we needed the e-mail, so we had to go back home to print off the e-mail. What a faff. Anyway, we got the bike for 39.99 :j

They have put the price back up to 64.99 and now advertising this as having a 5.00 discount, ie 59.99.

We're happy at that. Both main presents for the kids now purchased. Just need some odds and ends and stocking fillers.

Hi JonnyBravo - good to see you're still popping in here occasionally. Great news on the mortgage front - 34 months - less that 3 years, that's really good going!

Many thanks for the detailed posting. Firstly I think you'll agree that being in local government now is helping you (I'm guessing that you could have jumped to private sector otherwise but, like my wife, balance the benefits of working in a local authority vs salary elsewhere?

    Hi Stuart,
Just wanted to come back to this one. I once visited an IFA and he reported that to match the final salary pension package I'm getting, I'd need to look for another job at 8-10k more than what I'm currently getting.

As I've now had 10 years service, I now get 31 days annual leave, a good flexi scheme - no core time, as long as I do a minimum of 5 hours a day, I can pretty much suit myself - need to make up the hours over the course of a month. Flexi hours are 07.30 to 18.30. I try to get in early each day, so I can have tea / spend time with the kids on an evening.

Work, I'm pretty much left to manage my own time / workload with the projects I have on and it's a pretty relaxed environment. A good manager always helps.

So, it's not always just about the money...

Hi JonnyBravo - good to see you're still popping in here occasionally.

Oh yeah, I make sure I pop and have a look at your diary at least, say, twice a week... don't want to swell your head but it's the only one. Probably something to do with the fact that it's long standing.... I started posting regularly about the time you started your diary, and there's not too much inane girly gossip on it, sorry girls, but I am a bloke and IT IS just white noise. :D

Sorry I don't post more often... but like I said I'm a bloke.

I've been off in the ghetto of the house price forum regularly for months trying to add a little balance to some of the more "esoteric" postings but even there the volume of my postings have waned recently.
(It's been good to see DD equally speaking his mind in there now he's migrated from the DFW forum for his downtime though ;) )

Great news on the mortgage front - 34 months - less that 3 years, that's really good going!

Yep less than 3 years! As I said... can't wait!! :j

I'm currently looking for meal ideas / recipes - we're hosting a meal for 6 in the next few days and haven't quite decided what style of cooking we're doing just yet, ie French, Italian, Mexican etc, never mind actual recipes.

Have you made up your mind yet? :p

I love cooking for people (read showing off) :rotfl:
Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)
