Selling my car after specific date

  • I still have a month left after my insurance runs dry before we move, so as a last resort I will get the car parked up at a friends house, make a SORN, and advertise the car again.

Renting a car would not be worth it in the long-run. It's going to be £50-£60 per day + fuel.
Has the buyer viewed and had a test drive?
If not, I'd say your suspicions are correct.

The buyer was pretty quick to want to lay down a deposit, and had only seen the pictures and description in the ad. I've said I'll only accept a deposit after they've viewed the car and agreed the price, and I've set the deposit to 10% of the sale price, which the buyer seems to be agreeable with. Only time will tell I suppose.
  • This isn't going to end well!

OP you seem to be keen to extract the maximum from your car (which we all do) but you have added a ticking clock to the equation.

You can rent a car for £380 basic or £470 (with CDW etc) for the whole month of November in Dundee. Which isn't bad.

You'll get significantly less for it SORN - any buyer is going to have to buy without testing it (or testing it illegally) and will assume that it's either got problems or you can't afford to run it. You're probably as well just taking it to a car buying place the day the insurance runs out.

What are you trying to hire?

You should be able to get something from about £15-20 a day on a short term, so I'd expect some discount over a few week hire. It'd probably be better on fuel than your current car too, since it'll be <6 months old.

As above £50 - £60 a day what are you planning to hire?

Family member paid £19 a few months back. Fuel? Your paying for fuel anyway.

Sure, it was a quick search, but we're a family of 5, and I only really need the car on a Saturday from 7:30am, and have noticed that car rental companies are not always open on weekends, or they only allow rentals from 8am at the earliest. If there are better offers out there, great, but I don't feel comfortable with a hire car for a month or two.

Last hire car I had was a Fiesta from Enterprise and it cost £22 a day.

So hire it Friday til Sunday every week until you go from the point you sell the car - many car hire firms do offers over the weekend.

Should I reject the deposit, and only take the full amount on a first-come-first-serve basis,

Do you expect someone to pay £5000+ for the car but they only get ownership in December?

How do they know you will not sell to somebody else as well.

    or disappear with the car

or damage the car before then?

Ditto for agreeing on a price when the condition could change.

Are you saying you only need the car on a Saturday from 7:30am? Are you sure you can't just use a taxi?
