Eon electricity meter replacement

Eon have told me my electricity meter has come to the end of it's life and needs replacing.
I told them I did not want a smart meter, and they confirmed they couldn't force me to.
My question, being a rather untrusting person, is how will I know if the meter installed is a smart one or not?
If it's analog I guess it's not smart, but if It's digital is it the case it can be either smart or not?
Any clues on how to tell?

Under the rules they can fit a smart meter but not enable the comms.
If they did install a smart meter they would give you an IHD. The other option is to Google the meter model.

It's a meter, what possible differnce would it make if it was a smart one?

If they said they wont, then they wont.

Ask the meter tech on the day if its smart or dumb/classic.

Good and bad news. Suppliers have a legal right, and statutory duty, to replace end of life meters. Can they fit a smart meter? The answer is 'yes they can'. What they cannot do is enable the smart communications hub without your express permission so, to all intents and purposes, the meter is dumb.

There is some logic to this approach. A meter whether it be analogue or digital, smart or non-smart is just a meter which records usage. Secondly, as suppliers are under pressure to reach a 2020 smart meter roll out target it makes sense to fit a type of meter that could be updated with a comms connection should the owner change his/her mind. Thirdly, suppliers will not want to keep a stock of old analogue meters just to support a low percentage of their customers.

I am concerned that any old employee can log in and have a look at the usage and thereby know if the house is empty.
Or their databases could be hacked. Same issue.
It's a burglary risk in my opinion and I am not prepared to put my home at risk.
  • When installer turns up, clarify with him if its a dumb meter (not smart).

Eon are ringing daily, bombarding me with mail and beating on my door to fit a Smart meter . I do not want one for various reasons .
I am now looking for another supplier that will use a conventional meter.

As a former employee I take exception to this. Apologies please.

If you want to find out if a property is empty there are much easier ways of doing so.

I don't believe I have any reason to apologise.
