O/S Daily Saturday 14th October 2017
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

DH and I up enjoying first peaceful cuppas, both boys still in their pits.
Dinner last night was a disjointed one, as boys ate first, they had pizza and chips, DH and I ate when he got home (he wasn't late in, DS1 was going out so ate earlier than normal) he had battered chicken pieces, chips and beans, I had mushroom omelette and side salad. I think I may have made a bit of boo boo with the menu plan for tonight - it'll be just DH, myself and DS2 eating as DS1 is going away this afternoon until tomorrow lunchtime. Whilst doing the food shop yesterday I bought a chicken in a roasting bag for Sunday lunch, and chicken breasts to do something with for tonight's dinner - think I might have to change that, otherwise we'll be fed up of chicken! I have loads of eggs and bacon, so I'm thinking making a quiche, which I can serve with stuffed roasted flat mushrooms and cous cous stuffed peppers, side salad and coleslaw. The chicken breasts are fresh and could then be frozen for another day. The only downside of this is that we're going out this afternoon to visit DH's grandad as we haven't seen him for ages and have been trying to get for the past 3-4 weeks, we didn't go last week because DH was unwell and didn't want to take him the germs. I don't know how long we're going to be out and I do like something that I can get organised and cook quite quickly.
Yesterday I got the food shopping done and was home reasonably early, but realised that I didn't have any reasonable stocks of meat in my freezers. I've stopped visiting the butcher periodically and bulk buying. So I decided to visit the local farm shop/butcher as we had some vouchers to spend - the butcher does offers £10, £20 and more but I decided on the £20 deal but asked the butcher if I could swap the mince beef for extra of something else as we don't eat it which he did no problem, so I got 3 x large chicken breasts, 12 fat butchers sausages, 4 pork loin steaks, 2 x 1lb cubed beef (which looks really lovely and lean) and a boneless pork loin joint (which if I bought it alone it would cost £10 - so I don't think that's a bad deal and the meat is always good.) Also what I liked about this was the butcher choose the meat from the fresh display cabinet that I would choose from - it wasn't already prepacked so I got to see what I was buying, and I didn't part with any real money - it was all paid for in vouchers. I'm really trying to cut down on the waste and how much I'm spending, it's not great slowly getting there, was cross with myself last night though, as I'd made a good sized bowl full of HM coleslaw earlier on in the week and there was some left that then wasn't really edible so I threw it away - and I do that quite a bit with various things, so I'm endeavouring to plan better so everything get's used.
This morning the window cleaner is coming to do the windows, I'll head off into town once he's done to visit the bank and building society. I won't be buying anything foodwise - I have a full fridge, well stocked freezers and store cupboards, I need to be more proactive in using some of what I have in stock along side fresh stuff. This will be an ongoing task.
I need to get the ironing done this morning, I did get our bed stripped and remade, there is some washing in the dirty wash basket so that needs to go on. The supply of parts for our shower is in hand and I'm waiting on a telephone call to say said parts have arrived - and they should be free of charge due to still being within the 5 year guarantee period. I also took DS2 to a local car supplies company to see about doing his work experience there and they are taking him in November 2 days a week so he achieves the hours he needs, so all good.
Story that's turned into a book ......
Keep safe and well x

Good Morning everyone and thanks for starting us off nmlc .Well I am up with the birds this morning ,its quite warm here this morning ,even though its mid October ,really odd as you expect wind and rain but the south east is having odd weather at the moment.
I am off to The Big Knit at Rochester Cathedral this morning and will probably drive in a bit earlier as parking is sometimes difficult there. A morning knitting and nattering is just what I can do with today followed by possibly a nice lunch in the Cathedral cafe.
Our team didn't win at last nights charity quiz but we came fifth which we were quite pleased with and one of my team won a raffle prize which was nice. We have another one next Saturday night for Medway round table as its the 'quizzing' seasonMy lot are pretty good fun and we never take it too seriously.
My eldest DD and her OH are getting quite excited as next Friday they are off to NYC to see my eldest DGS Danny and his wife Hayley for a week They have been out there since January living, and she is so looking forward to seeing them both. We all Facetime them but its not the same as seeing them in person.
Youngest DD had her pre op yesterday and all is fine and she will have her op on the 28th of this month .It will hopefully be a good job as he walking is becoming more and more painful for her The scan showed that apart from her plantar fasciitis she also has a trapped and twisted nerve in her foot which hopefully they will remedy for her. Its day surgery so I have promised to go with her and stay until she is let out.My sosn in-law isn't very good with hospitals and stresses about it all so he is better off with the boys and dogs at home. I shall be OK as I will take a book and some knitting with me
Right time for a cuppa ,hope everyone has a good day what ever they are doing and <<Hugs>> for those who are feeling down or worried
Take care all

Morning all and thank you for starting the thread nmlc.
I haven't posted as regularly this week because of having little to say and being so busy at work. Something at work has upset me, a person not being honest and open. I'll deal with that, obviously but it leaves a bitter taste. And my manager will be away for the next week and a half so has sent everyone an email saying just go to ancientofdays, so next week will be fun.
In personal terms, I feel flatter than a flounder so silver oldie, I do sympathise. I don't put too much personal stuff on here but the past few years have been hard.
Never mind, things will improve at least I do hope so, I can't bear the thought of feeling like this forever.
I will go and cheer myself up now, tea might be goodI was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0 -
Morning folks and thanks NMLC. It feels very mild this morning, it's not natural for mid October. 20 deg forecast for today which would be nice if sun came with it but, apparently, it won't!
My Friday clean round never happened yesterday. All day I felt stiff and ached all over and just cba. Though we did manage the top up shop at Aldi, with a quick foray into Sainsbobs for bits Aldi don't sell. Aldi was quite busy being Friday but Sainsbobs was near on deserted. I don't know how it is keeping going these days.
I have had some patio and drive moss killer sitting in the kitchen for weeks waiting to be sprinkled all over the drive. It has to be done on a day when rain isn't forecast! Err when might that be!
There seemed to be a surplus of chicken fillets in the freezer so I thought it was time they saw the light of day. Some out thawing to be transformed into curry for tonight's dinner.
I need to pop in town at some point today as I have 4 birthdays looming and need cards. Also a gift to accompany one of them. No idea what!
Have a good day folks if you can and (HUGS) for the sad and poorly ones for whom life is a struggle just now. Take care all xx"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
Good morning everyone.
I was sound asleep and enjoying a dream when DM phoned me from her room! She get atrial fibrillation and had been in it for most of the night, think she wanted a hug. Her pulse is calming down now. She’s regretting postponing going for the three day monitor yesterday.
Last night I ordered in fish and chips (for DM) and chicken and chips (for me) from Jaconelli’s, a local place which delivers. DM loves fish and chips and hadn’t had any ‘proper’ ones for ages. She thoroughly enjoyed it all, eating with her fingers!
Yesterday was the birthday of a close family friend, my oldest nephew and my late father. Like buses. My father would have been 102 if still alive, I still miss him.
Anyway, my day of excitement will be doing DM’s shopping and then going home. I have venison casserole to eat up waiting for me.
Hope everyone is doing well or getting better. Happy Saturday to all.0 -
Morning everyone
Thank you for starting us off nmlc.
I’m sorry that you are so down Silveroldie I hope that things improve for you soon.
Dumpling I’m glad that things are still going better for you and your family,
The electricians who came to give me quotes for my sitting room lights all verbally gave a quote and they were all within £30 of each other so when I get them in writing I will ask around and see if anyone I know has any experience of using any of them before deciding.
On top of my washing machine and fridge/freezer breaking and being beyond economical repair, the television has developed a problem. It only switches on after numerous attempts. I phoned a couple of tv Ariel/repair companies yesterday and they both said it was probably one of two things, and that it probably wasn’t worth repairing as I will have had it 10 years in January. I will be able to buy a decent one for not a lot more than I paid for this one. My savings are really taking a hit at the moment. I will try and nurse it through until the Black Friday/sales start. There is a small one in my bedroom on a will bracket. I will have to have a hunt for the stand today just in case I need it.
Other than that, I think today will be spend in, going through my finances and looking for even more area that I can possibly cut expenditure. Just as well I had already earmarked the electrician’s money although I may have to rethink that in the short term.
Right, time for breakfast and more tea.
Have a good day everyone whatever you are doing.0 -
Morning All
Hope your DM is ok Gers.
Glad to hear things are on the up dumpling.
Hugs to you Silveroldie.
Had a brilliant nights sleep - 9 hours! Managed to get everything up to date at work before the holiday so I think that helped.
My friends across the road are away in NYC for a week and the children are being looked after by their Granny. I had a message from the daughter saying that the log burner didn't 'sound' right and would I hurry over - she was right, Granny had left the door open and it was roaring! Meanwhile the son was busy playing his XBox completely oblivious to it all. I may have to have a quiet word with him about helping out, he's 14.
Anyway, I am taking the daughter to get her nails done as a birthday treat. Granny wants to come along too so I'm getting my earplugs ready as she talks non-stop!
I'll strip my bed in a bit, it looks like it may get a blow outside before the rain starts again. DW also needs to go on.
Hope you all have a good weekend. Take care. XX0 -
Morning all
Glorious day down here on the coast. Breadmaker and washing machine on, family coming for lunch before we do long walk along the coastal path and then out for local am dram show tonight.
Trying to eat bits and pieces from freezer so we can decant into smaller freezer and defrost before we go away in December for a couple of months. Have just the 25 butternut squash left in garage from the allotment!! Hoping what is left will be OK whilst away, I have a fear of rodents.
Hope those struggling feel a bit better today
Have a good weekend allCarolbee0 -
Morning everyone,
Bit later as have been over the yard to feed Lulu, it's a beautiful morning, mild and sunny which appreciate isn't seasonal but lovely all the same
I managed to go through the whole house yesterday so, apart from washing the bed linen, my time is my own, sort of! My eldest DSS is coming over to watch the footie with his Dad so picked up some sausage meat in the shopping and will make some sausage rolls for lunch, supper will be the other half of the veggie shepherds pie from a couple of weeks ago. I am then meeting my friend over the yard this afternoon when we can hopefully get out on the horses.
Thoughts are with AOD and Silveroldie and anyone else struggling at the moment.
Have a good day folks x0 -
Morning ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one.
A lovely bright morning OH is out finishing off putting the preservative on the shed. It feels quite warm in the sun, looking at the forecast for the hurricane, it looks as if we might be just on the edge of it unless it changes course over the next 24 hours.
Well its the big day minus one.........I know the bride will be ok, but I have reservations about the groom, I know what he was like when he proposed to her in front of 10 people, what he is going to be like tomorrow in front of getting on for a hundred people I dare not contemplate. I will just have to keep fingers crossed.
I spoke to the Drs yesterday and OH can have travel sickness medication, it will not react with his other medication, so hopefully I will get him there and back without too much trouble. We are not staying for the meal, I am not supposed to drive in the dark and it would be well dark before the meal is finished.
No real plans for the day, I might fiddle with some lavender sachets for the fair, will see what I can find to make them out of.
Sausage with something for supper, I was going to do liver and bacon, but just cba..........0 -
Morning all
Thanks for the thread nmlc and hugs to all those in need.
Only four working days left until I retire, work is ridiculously busy as everyone is panicking about my impending departure.
Have a good day everyone.
