Energy suppliers when moving credit check

Hi
I am moving house next Thursday. The new home is on an Eon tariff and currently I am with Co-operative. I just called Eon to see what the house move process is and the automated message says it will perform a credit check after giving them the meter readings. Obviously I do not want this before I have completed.
Can I just tell them to keep me on the standard tariff (even though sky high prices) or shall I wait until after the completion date to give them all my info?

There's no need to contact them at all until you've completed and got meter readings.0
-
You wouldn't take on the new contract supply until you are the owner anyway, so naturally that will happen after you have completed.0
-
Wait till you move.
When you leave the house, read the meter, ring Coop, give them the reading, and ask fr a final bill (sent to your new address).
Read meter at new house, ring Eon and give them the start reading and your details to take on the account.
In the next week or 3, when you have time, use comparison sites to compare supplers at your new address, and switch if you wish.0 -
Eon as the encumbant supplier will do what all suppliers do when a property changes hands - Put the new occupier onto their expensive Standard tariff.
If the house already has Credit meters Eon certainly will not swap them for PAYGO meters, but they could ask for an upfront deposit.
If the sellers are still in residence ask them what the annual Gas & Elec consumption figures are*, then use these to research the whole market before you move in - You can Switch supplier as soon as you get the 'Welcome' letter from Eon.
*These figures are their consumption, yours will vary depending on family size and lifestyle, but it's a good starting point0 -
Good morning purpleparrotuk,
Already some excellent advice on the thread, so thank you guys :T
I would suggest contacting us when you've actually taken responsibility of the property, you can then take some start meter reads ( this is really important)
I'll give a bit of info about what needs to happen when you move.
When you first contact us about a property you've moved into and which we supply, we need to set up an account for you. As the existing supplier, you become our customer as soon as you use energy. This is what’s known as a deemed contract.
We've a specialist Home Moves section who’ll sort this. They’ll need to ask some questions to make sure the account is set up correctly. This will include asking for the address, contact details, the date you took over responsibility for the bills, meter readings and, if applicable, details of the landlord. Again, if applicable, we'll also ask if you've a forwarding address for the previous occupant. This is to make sure their bills and correspondence aren't sent to you.
As part of this, we also ask to do a credit check and will need your date of birth to complete this. We won't do this check without your permission but, if you turn this down, will note the account accordingly. This may affect the type of payment arrangement we're able to offer.
Once the account is up and running, you can set up an online account and have a look at what tariff would be best for you, or we can do it for you over the phone if that would be better
The online account is a really good way to keep your eye on everything, Direct Debits, changing your own tariff, putting meter reads on to produce real time bills and balance and lot's more.
Hope this explains purpleparrotuk, but please ask if you need any help.
Thank you
Helena

Thanks for all the replies. I will wait until I move in then. I am hoping to get smart meters too at some stage so hopefully if I get a good deal at Eon I will stick with them as I understand they can supply smart meters.0

Good luck with that, I must admit, E-on have generally been pretty good.
But as for smart meters ummmm. they wrote to us I would guess about 4 years ago asking do we want smart meters, oh yes we replied, we are rather busy they replied will probably be 6 months. 4 years later still no smart meters and we are moving out ourselves within a month0 -
I used to be with Eon but due to price hikes switched. I also expressed an interest in smart metres ages ago and heard nothing. Maybe Eon could clarify why no response to people’s interest?Good luck with that, I must admit, E-on have generally been pretty good.

Just out of interest, what do you see as the benefits of using a smart-meter?0
