Brexit, the economy and house prices part 5

We're leaving the customs union though so it changes won't benefit us.The vast majority of complaints I have heard about the Leave campaign were centred around big letters and numbers on a bus.
I don't know anyone who changed their outlook because of what they saw on social media, or how they were targetted.
I'm sure the data analytics advocates would like to think they can have a much greater influence than they really have. If they were that good we would all be drinking Brand X of cola by now.
The bus was a blatant and outright lie. No one can claim with a straight face that the statement was ever true.
Analytics can be pretty accurate at targeting people, then very emotive advertising was given to them. Given the insignificant margin it wouldn't take many people to have their minds changed, and the advertising was aimed at the undecided (I'm not sure how they established that or it's accuracy). That so much was spent on it (more than allowed) means that the leave campaign felt it was worth it. It very likely caused the result, or at least puts it firmly into doubt.0 -
The psyche has changed though, I would argue.
Up until Brexit there was a feeling that you could manage the public vote using a centralised approach. Osborne would preach his wise words using 10 year charts and graphs, and we were all supposed to fall in line, and acknowledge how well things must be going.
But it didn't feel like that on the ground.
Brexit showed that the people still had a voice, and I have no doubt played a part in the election of Trump.
It's shaken the faith of the people in Westminster and Washington.
There are council elections being held in many places on May 3rd.
In the past the turnout has been between 30% to 35%.
I wonder if the referendum result and the continued debate will fire up a lot more people to use their vote.
Whatever the results I do find it sad that so few use a vote that people fought and died for.
I imagine those posting on this type of forum who have a vote on May 3rd will be using it.There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -
October is the earliest we can start the transition talks. So maybe that's the point of new return.Advent Challenge: Money made: £0. Days to Christmas: 59.0

Politico highlight how trade has grown and slowed.
Strange how things turn out. Of course one quarter does not swallow a summer.
QUOTE
Challenge: Figures published by the Office for National Statistics released yesterday showcased the Brexit dilemma. In the three months to February, goods traded with the EU increased despite Brexit, while trade with the rest of the world decreased by around 4 percent. Fox et al say this only proves their point, Britain needs to free itself to trade with countries outside the EU. Unsurprisingly, anti-Brexit campaign group Best for Britain takes a different view. We should not abandon the solid reality of our real and growing trade within the EU for the fantasy of Global Britain, it says. Pay your money, take your choice

I think after this mess we might see increased voter apathy. I wouldn't be surprised if we have record low turn out.0 -
How much do we send the EU every week? Its not 350m?
We had this discussion before, chaps.
The claim on the bus was a blatant lie.
Furthermore nobody on the Leave campaign ever stated 350m would go to the NHS. Despite posing in front of campaign posters telling 350m would go to the NHS.
Doesn't matter anyway, because nobody believed the bus claim - as some say on this thread.
Nobody except the 3rd of Britons who did believe it.

We are where we are now and there's really no point discussing the bus anymore. The damage has been done.
We now should all look forward and support the PM in delivering a BINO, or to keep us at least in the CU, preferably the SM also.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -
Yeah I've no interest in spending another dozen of pages. It's an indisputable fact but it's interesting to watch cogito trying to avoid admitting it.0

Very true. As far as I remember; those that claim not to be influenced by advertising tend to be more susceptible than average.
If advertising didn't work it wouldn't be a multi billion industry.0
