Why do we need a second referendum to overturn the result a non legally binding, merely advisory first referendum?

Because it would be Political suicide to do it without one

  • I wonder how keen Remainers and apostate Leavers would remain on Remaining if the bill were, say, 100 billion.

As the cost of leaving will be in the region of £400 billion by 2030 then paying a mere 100bn to stay would be well worth it

But there will be no cost to staying in

Just rescind article 50 and learn some humility...
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I was talking to some EU nurses about this recently as my dad was very ill and I've spent a lot of time in hospitals. The issues as they relayed to me, were less to do with FoM and more to do with the falling pound, which makes nursing in the UK less attractive when you speak several languages. That coupled with spending cuts that make working in the NHS very stressful.

As with anything else Brexit related, it is more nuanced than the headlines suggest. I have no doubt that some aren't coming due to potential FoM restrictions, and the fall in the pound has happened since Brexit.

If we focus solely on FoM, then there is a risk that we find the wrong solution. For example, we could solve FoM, but could be missing a bigger issue if non EU doctors and nurses are not coming either.

Does it matter why? We are encouraging them to leave. The pound fell because of Brexit, the NHS struggles because of a weakening economy......
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

You might not like the result of a second one either. Could that just be ignored - would you then want a third?

We have already had 2 EU referendums, should we have a third?

Why not? If they said 100 billion you'd want to pay, so why would the EU walk away from 100 billion of totally free money?

I didn't actually vote in the referendum because I thought the debate was so poor, but I wonder how keen Remainers and apostate Leavers would remain on Remaining if the bill were, say, 100 billion.

It won't be, so discussing this is a mute point. Negotiations are still underway. Let's wait and see.

    New York or Tokyo even......

The French of course would prefer Paris.

Not this old chesnut. Sterling was overvalued at the time. That's the reality.

Moot point. And any discussion is a moot point. A moot is a discussion.
