Herzlos, I am a loss to understand why “the odious man” would think immigration would be discussed during the complex Brexit negotiations. Immigration is entirely in Britains hands.

The 3 million Europeans already living here perhaps. Along with their potential spouses and extended families.

That is all to do with Citizens Rights which was one of the three key subjects that formed part of the phase one talks.

Immigration to Britain is a separate subject.
After March 2019 or even at the end of the transition period EU27 Citizens will not be able to freely move to Britain (and the other way round)
After one of those dates EU Citizens will apply to live/work in Britain just like any other immigrant. It will be fascinating to see what the rules will be.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Didn't realise that anything had been agreed. Talks are as yet, just talks.

I do think they need to start the development of the next Customs system.

Even if we don't know the actual rule sets yet, there is still lots that can be done. A well rehearsed and comprehensive change management system will be essential if the politicians start agreeing 11th hour revisions.

Even with this, the timeline to say Dec 2020 would be tight.

I have yet to see a single comment on this thread that reveals a glimmer of understanding of how currency markets work or the factors that drive them. This especially applies to remainers who revel in any news which supports their lost cause and deride any news that doesn't.

Currency is working in the UK's favour currently. Not going to miraculously transform the economy overnight. However provides the foundation for the future when coupled with broader long term policies.

Realising that consumers are increasingly aware of fuel economy, the company are introducing a 3-litre diesel version capable of 30+ mpg to go with the current gas-guzzling range of petrol V6's and V8's.
Where are all the planned many thousands of these new diesel engines being built?

That's another one in the eye for the "protectionist Americans" claim of Brexit naysayers.

  • Here's a report in Politico confirming some of the reasons for anxiety across the EU regarding Brexit.
The impact of Brexit will vary considerably across the European Union, with some regions bracing for severe costs and others less exposed.

That’s the message from data collected by the EU’s Committee of the Regions on the predicted local economic and cultural fallout of the U.K.’s departure from the bloc.
    https://www.politico.eu/article/brexit-impact-on-european-regions-revealed-by-eu-report-phase-2-negotiations/

Interesting reading and confirmation of what has been said before in this thread, namely that the UK is not the weak petitioner that some persist upon imagining.

For those still dreaming of staying in the EU or another referendum, read this from the official Government response to the petition to leave the EU immediately:
The country voted to leave the EU, and the Government is clear that there must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door, and no second referendum.
    https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/200165

Will we see a softening then from Eurocrats or will self-destructive protectionism win the day?
  • Another interesting report (in Quartz) from an Ipsos/Mori poll:
Many of Europe’s biggest economies aren’t holding out much hope for 2018.

Even Germans are only 1% more optimistic than us here in the UK - and that'll decrease if the EU don't play ball and jobs are at risk because of Brexit.

Even Juncker seems to have got the message eventually

Dagenham is Ford's largest global engine plant. Unfortunately vehicle production ceased some years ago. Numbers employed at the plant are a fraction of what they were in the heyday. Not going to make a huge difference to the balance of trade figures. Given the amount of imported parts currently used.
