Pay monthly to sim only

Hi
My pay monthly contracts ends this month.
I want to keep my phone and reduce my bills so I'm planning to go sim-only.
Could someone describe the process?

I think I have to ring my current provider for a PAC first and sign up to the sim-only service but how do I do it so there is minimal overlap?

you need to ask your network for an unlock code as your phone (unless you bought it yourself sim free) will be locked to that nnetwrk


ask for PAC code (you can often do this online now without a call)


sign up for sim only and supply PAC code


when you activate the sim the transfer process starts , they normally say "up to 24 hours" but Ive normally seen it happen within an hour or so

If your existing provider has a decent SIM only offer, or will price match a competitor, you don’t need to obtain a PAC, just talk to them and see what they can offer... equally, don’t be fooled into another 2 year phone + SIM package.

If nothing worthwhile is offered, ask for a PAC and give the details to your new SIM only provider.

FWIW, Three have reasonable SIM only deals if you want a lot of data and unlimited calls. Good for a comparison if you don’t want to switch to them. http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Plans_for_phones

I hadn't considered staying (with Vodafone) but I'll see what they offer. I did have my eye on an iD mobile sim - they seem on the face of it very good value.

I seem to recall with Vodafone if you cancel your contract then your sim automatically becomes a PAYG sim on your contract termination, rather than a sim which no longer works.

Just moved my mum over to Tesco Mobile from Vodafone and it was painless, sent two text messages (one for the number we wanted to keep and the other being the PAC) and we got her moved over the next day, all the iMessages, Voicemail all came back painlessly and the deal we got was very good, no difference in signal, speed or voice/text quality.

I've spoken to Vodafone about moving to ID mobile or plusnet. They said (funnily enough) that the mobile service offered is not as good as the network they piggyback on. Whilst I'm sure he was laying it on - is there an element of truth in this?
