DRO & Council Tax Bailiffs
Hello everyone!
Background: Fulltime student so exempt from council tax payments for the next 1.5 years. For the last 2 years the debt has been with bailiff after bailiff. The council refuse my offers and refuse to take it back. I've never been informed that the bailiffs have sent it back. I just get new notice. I do not communicate with bailiffs, keep doors and windows locked. I refuse to deal with them. There is no controlled goods agreement and I've never had one.
I'm hoping a DRO will help. I understand that council tax debt is covered in a DRO. And together with my few other small debts I could be debt free by the time I qualify.
So my question are what happens with the CT debt covered in a DRO if it's currently with enforcement officers? Will the bailiffs still try to seize goods during the one year DRO period? Can they still hound me until the dept is wiped?
Please someone give me some good news. Would going BR stop them?

How much is the Liability Order for that the bailiffs are enforcing?

CraigI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thanks for replying. No dispute there are 3. It's 1345 but with compliance stage fee just over 1500.0

Hi Pickles02
Once the DRO is made you can no longer be pursued for the council tax debt, by the council or the bailiffs. The only exception would be if the bailiff had already made a valid list of your goods, then there would be the risk they could still take these items. As you say the bailiff has never listed your goods, this is not something we need to worry about.
Make sure you continue to keep your doors locked and do not let the bailiff in. If you have a car, keep it hidden. The intermediary you apply for the DRO through should fully explain the process but if you have more questions you can always ask on here or contact one of the free debt advice charities. Good luck.
