We have an close relative who has all of a sudden decided to contact us and asked to move in with us. He left with debts which we cleared the majority of . That was 8 years ago . He won't divulge if he owes money still after living stateside. Is there anyway we could do a financial background check? Just concerned if he has debts from the states he is not taking responsibility for.
Is it possible to find out without him knowing ? Tia

If he won't divulge, that suggests the answer is yes, he does owe money.
I'm not aware of a debtors register in the U.S., but perhaps someone will be able to advise who has more knowledge of their financial system. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You can check to see if he was made bankrupt in the US, as those are public records.

He left with debts that you paid off.
He's now asking to move in with you.
He won't tell you if he has debts.
Why would you even consider saying 'yes'?0 -
Oh please beware of doing this. You may feel you have no alternative but I fear you are asking for trouble.
The fact that he expects you to provide him a home yet he is not prepared to be honest with you about how financial situation suggests the sort of character you are dealing with. We will probably see you back posting in this thread before too long about the nightmare scenarios this relative is causing you. Surely there is another way of hand,in this living accommodation. Is he a British Citizen with possibly some kind of entitlement to a British benefits or is he just coming over here with a US passport and huge expectations of a life long free safety net?
For heavens sake, please do your homework first!0 -

Can someone who has been living in the USA for 8 years just rock back here and claim benefits?
Genuine question - I'm on my phone and can't Google as well as on my laptop.:o0 -
Why did you pay off his debts? Even if he does have debts you're not liable so it wouldn't affect you anyway. I'm not saying to let him move back - if he's so bad with money you probably couldn't be sure of getting rent from him on time - but I don't see how you could be considered financially linked for any of it to be your problem.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

"Sorry it's not convenient, we have a house-full already / we are in the process of selling/moving / Joe Bloggs is staying with us for a while [INSERT EXCUSE HERE]".
End of story. Why would you even consider it.
