I want to win....

I want to win competitions, but I don't want to waste my time and effort entering them, so I will pay XYZ.com £10 per month to enter 100 competitions per month for me.

Why? Just Why?

I thought the point of comping was....

1) Looking through, Social Media, Mammy Blogs, Web Sites ect and choosing what you would actually like to win for yourself/family/friends (you actually find some interesting stuff along the way sometimes)

2) Filling in the odd hour when you have nothing to do

3) One eye on the TV and one on your computer

4) While chilling out and listening to music

5) When the bairns have finally gone to bed

6) So you didn't have to talk to your significant other half :rotfl:

In all honesty how long does it take to enter 100 C2W's or 100 Mag Dailies or 100 Twitter comps maybe 20 minutes maximum?

I'm not knocking anyone who does pay, and this thread is meant to be lighthearted, I personally just don't see the point in paying to comp.

So do you pay or DIY? :D

Agree with everything you have said but I don't imagine anyone who does pay someone to enter would ever visit comper's chat corner, so everyone here will probably agree with you.

Some folks might do half and half ;)

I think most in here will be DIY'ers

I was just wondering what the DIY'ers thought of those that paid (and vice versa)

And when/why/and doing what the rest of us comped.

As I said it wasn't a dig at anyone, obviously there are folks that pay or these companies that entered for folks would be out of business.

One or two thoughts that has come to mind is ...
How do they prove to the payer that they have entered competitions for them?
How does the person running the competition know it has been entered by a third party and not an individual?
Do they enter different competitions to us?
Do they win more than us?

  • I've been comping for over 30 years from when you actually had to physically traipse to the post office in all weathers to buy a stamp and post your entry, it was part of the fun, although there weren't half as many competitions in ye olden days :D , (but they were often good quality prizes)

I've always done it for the fun and 'chance element' & only enter for what I'd really like to win if lucky. Comps that require a bit of effort and are judged are my favourite, makes me feel like I made an effort and deserved the prize more so than simply entering my name & number for anything & everything. (I've been quite successful :o )

Paying someone to enter would make me think its the wrong 'hobby' for me, where the heck is the fun or reward? I think its just indicative of the (lazy?) 'want anything and everything for nothing but don't want to put in any effort' mentality increasingly prevalent today in general. If they don't have time or don't want to put in any effort but will pay someone else to do it for them, then frankly I don't think comping is really the hobby for them as the only guaranteed real winner is the person they pay £120 a year to, suckers! :rotfl: ;) Someone may mention the lottery, where millions pay to play with minimal effort, (probably why I don't do it), but you still have an involvement at some level other than simply handing over your money.

I appreciate some may disagree, but I stand by my comment *No money exchanged hands for the writing of this comment, its all my own work :p

A while ago I know just one of the pay to enter mob could chuck over 20,000 entries into a competition (and there is more than one doing it) - the current most viewed MSE thread with a single post on the main board is "E: 31/10 Win Your Dream Wedding Worth Up To £40,000" which has been there for almost a year and has less than 6,000 views, the vast majority of single post threads have less than 4,000.

I suppose it's a "bit of a gamble", the fact they are competitions is unimportant, they are paying for the chance to win something same as buying a raffle ticket, having a bet etc.

The direct comparison would be with playing the lottery online by direct debit and that would be no different to a pay to enter site, you don't need to know your numbers and you get e-mailed if you win.

    Very well said :T

I totally agree with what I have highlighted and not just for effort comps even for like and shares on FaceBook or even retweets on Twitter I have made some effort to win.

I need a new microwave at the minute as ours is making some very strange noises, if I were to pay to enter comps at £120 per year I may as well just go to Asda (other supermarkets are available :p ) and buy one.

I've been comping on and off for over 30 years. Used to go round supermarkets buying products and collecting leaflets and making up slogans. I gave up for years when two young children meant time was at a premium. Started again when DD was a teenager back in 2008, which is when I found MSE.

I work full time, so log in and enter a few daily gleam and R/C in the morning, whilst I have a cup of coffee, then during my lunch break at work, I log in on my work PC and enter a few more.

Then in the evening unless I have other plans, I enter on my laptop whilst watching TV for a couple of hours.

At weekends, I catch up on what I have missed in the week, in between shopping, housework, gardening etc.

I have MS, so this is a good hobby for me as I am not able to go rock climing, play golf or run marathons (not that I did anyway before I developed MS:rotfl:)

Your right it is paying for a chance to win something whether it be competitions or the lottery

Your right it is paying for a chance to win something, whether it be competitions or the lottery with no effort whatsoever.

So where we are at least trying and making some effort and call this our "hobby" those who pay for the lottery and to enter competitions must just be "gamblers" having a bet.

    Does that sound right?

Another vote for DIY here. My policy is never to pay to enter any competition (other than paying for the broadband connection which we have for other reasons anyway).

re the point "How does the person running the competition know it has been entered by a third party and not an individual?"... I think the competition organiser would be able to detect multiple entries from the same computer by checking the IP address. So paying a middleman to enter for you probably disqualifies you because your name and details are being uploaded from the same IP address as those of all the other people who paid the middleman to enter for them. ?
