Gas Central Heating Installation

Hello,

We recently purchased a duplex (split-level) 2-bed flat (~74 m2) in a purpose-made block (built in the 1960's). The property currently has an E7 meter; space heating is by means of electric storage heaters and water heating is by means of an electric immersion heater.

We have not yet moved in but we are looking into the possibility of installing gas central heating. We found out from the survey that there is a gas line coming right up to the meter cupboard just outside the flat entrance but there is no gas connection to the inside of the property, and no gas meter in the cupboard.

We know for a fact that other flats in the block have gas connections (GCH and gas hobs). We are trying to estimate how much it would cost to install gas central heating throughout the flat, assuming the gas supply to the property can be made live.

We are thinking 4 radiators (2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen) and 1 towel heater in the bathroom, associated pipework, new gas boiler, TRV's, thermostat, wireless control system.. We are budgeting £3-5k for the whole thing. Is that reasonable?

Can we get 1 contractor to do everything (incl. installing new gas meter), or does an energy company need to get involved, e.g. for installing new meter or connecting the gas supply to the property?

Thanks for your help

Dont forget your hot water - you may need a replacement hotwater tank unless you go for a combination boiler.

Can't answer for getting gas into the flat but I'd guess that once the piping is all in place then it would be for the supplier/gas distributor to fit the meter and make the gas "live"

Thanks for the heads up, hadn't thought of that.

I'm now thinking of putting a combi boiler where the electric immersion heater currently is, in a cupboard upstairs next to the bathroom. Is there any issue with this location being probably the furthest away from where the gas supply would come into the flat? In all the flats I've lived in the boiler has always been in the kitchen / near the entrance but space is rather limited in this kitchen..
