Collecting mail from old address

What a lot of unhelpful people....!

The legal advice give is absolutely right - no obligation on the new occupant, tenant or owner, to do anything with the mail. It has been properly delivered by RM to the correct address. Thereafter it can be binned, returned to sender, or pretty much whatever the occupant chooses.

But personally I'd keep it for a short while and if the old occupant rang, or knocked, I'd arrange to hand ti over.

Yes, RM re-direction is sensible, but it's never 100% reliable - occasional post will still go to the old address. And these days there are multiple other mail companies too....

Plus, yes, some people are just not so organised and don't put redirection in place till you suggest it to them (which I'd do if they turned up to collect their mail!).

But meanwhile, why not be helpful and pass on the mail if asked - at least the first time, or if RM redirection has let one slip through.

    Karma.

If it hadn't been for the 'I don't wish to pay for redirection' at the end of the post and the not written but implied 'so fully expect that other people should put themselves out on my behalf so I don't have to' I would completely agree with you.

If the old occupant brought tea and cake... I'd consider it.
As above though, how do we know it isn't some identity fraudster bearing cake?

-'so fully expect that other people should put themselves out on my behalf so I don't have to'-
I do not ask nor imply that anyone should do anything- I just dont want my mail thrown away!

Personally I have no qualms about people collecting their mail,(ID helps), if it was within say 6 months
I left a forwarding address with the agency
I dont have £30 to spend on unnecessary royal mail redirection

I'd like the new tenants to leave my new mail so I can collect, just for a month or two, until I am sure I have changed my address with everything
The agency was implying that it would be against the law to ask for my mail, and so I want to be sure that the law hasnt changed regarding this in the last 10 years or so when I was out of the UK

You could do some name and address labels for your new address and ask the new tenant if they would stick new address label on any post and simply re-post.

You can ask, but they are under no legal obligation to oblige. Mail is sent to an address. That's it.

And clearly it IS necessary. You just want to trot round to your old address every week. £30 is worth multiple trips to an old address IMO. Time is money.

Yes, I'd find that easier than the old occupier and me trying to meet each other.

A few years ago I rented a house where the previous owner was continuing to use the address, and regularly knocked on the door asking for his post. It got to the point where he was sending other people round who were also using the address (for official stuff like car tax etc), and they were also waiting outside the door for me to get home from work so that they could hassle me for their post. I played along for a couple of weeks as I have no objection to being helpful, but when I realised they were waiting for me to get home I started to feel pretty unsafe and put my foot down - I stopped answering the door to them, and the post went back in the box marked 'return to sender, addressee moved away'. It stopped pretty quickly, thankfully.

I would be polite and hand over mail the first time, maybe the second time - but after that nope. I'm not your PA.

(Yes, i have issues currently with mail from the old owners coming to this address - we have been here a year now - we get so much of their mail i have a 'no longer at this address' stamp!)
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

50/50 chance the letters will be held at the sorting office to be collected and paid for with penalty unless a stamp was also put on.

RM no longer have to 'forward' mail free, though in practice the postie's often still do.

Good point. If previous tenant turned up I'd give him the mail but (as I said earlier) suggest RM Redirection. If he said he didn't want to (pay for this), I'd suggest that in that case he wouldn't get his mail in future.

Though if he left me printed labels, and stamps, I might consider forwarding his mail for a limited time if I liked him(/her).....
