iPad apps

My mum has an old iPad mini which is now no longer supported by Apple. It only has IOS 9.something on and won’t get any more updates.

Tonight I did a backup to iTunes, however there wasn’t an option to view any apps. The wee colour blocks at the bottom of iTunes says that there’s 8.4gb of apps there but no way of viewing them.

If I buy a new iPad mini and do a restore will the apps be part of it? She has at least one purchased app amongst the free ones.

The change you are seeing is due to iTunes 12.7, with this release Apple has removed iOS app management. So getting any new device will not change the situation.

All app iOS app downloading now has to be done on the device itself.

Does it still work for what she wants, if so do not give apple any more money yet. Microsoft will soon stop updates to Windows 10 for old CPUs too (cue Minty person calling for kewl kids, although he appears to be PPR'd at the moment). If it works now and assuming she isn't using it for dodgy apps like Online Banking and Online shopping all should be well for a few more years . The problem I have with is with Apple retiring old hardware which is fully functioning (eg my ipad 2) so they can sell me more overpriced if sexy/well made/must have kit to boost their overblown share price.

Thanks for that, I thought I was going a bit loopy earlier!

I assume that, IF I did get her a new tablet I could just reload from the App Store?

You’re probably dead right! My mum is a rising 90 year old, no banking apps or online shopping so all she does on it is email, reading the news and doing her beloved scrabble (the paid for app).

Why exactly are you getting a new iPad. Is it because your mum wants the latest IOS and features or because an app can't run on IOS 9?

Just because the latest IOS can't be put on the device doesn't make it a bad device by default.

For the app issue your mum should have had icloud back up running on her old ipad

When you get a new device it will ask for your apple id and ask if you want to restore from a back up and it will download all your content including apps onto the device.

Sorry fanboi does it upset your raison d'etre. I have an ipad 2 as I said , plus and ipad air 2 which I didn't mention, I asked the OP if her mum needs it for the latest updates or does it does it do what she needs it for, if so no need to worry. Get back in your nursery;)

The strike out on my post about retiring(or not supporting) old hardware is valid as is the point about Microsoft not offering W10 on old hardware in the future.

As stated above by others, the Apps belong to her via her iTunes account, and will be stored in iCloud, and iTunes has changed how it works.
I am sure(hope) your mum will last longer than her ipad battery. Just be careful that the scrabble doesn't get updated so that it needs iOS 10+ , which I am sure that apple will not ship an update to her ios9 anyway if it does.

ah name calling a trusty defence.

Retiring and supporting are two different words and if you went with not supporting then that part of the statement is valid. Not supporting old hardware with the latest software is standard for all manufactures so no reason to hate Apple on that.

All the other strikethroughs still stand and the words that are not I agree with you.

OP in your reply to your original question: if your Mum decides to get a newer iPad she'd be able to download her previous apps included purchased ones assuming they're 64 bit compatible as iOS 11 no longer supports 32 bit.

When your Mum signs in with her iTunes account as part of the set up process you have the chance to start afresh or restore from an iCloud back up.

If you do decide to replace the older iPad with a new one, it’s worth checking if Apple will take the old one as a trade in, last year we upgraded our iPhone 5’s and were given a voucher for £100 for each of them, a similar price (with zero hassle) to the eBay price at the time.

Apple Stores offer a good migration service, I appreciate not everyone needs help but they have endless time and fairly good WiFi too.
