Car Tax Refund ... I have been exempt and paying

Options
Hello,

I am wondering if anyone knows ...

I have been exempt, due to disability, of paying road tax since March 2016. However, I did not realise I was exempt.

I am going to be applying for the exemption with the exemption certificate I have been issued by DWP.

Will I be refunded for the period I have been exempt and paying?

Roughly £25 per month?

Thanks for the help guys!

Good luck on getting a refund.

I'm not sure you'll succeed in getting that refund. Is it Enhanced Mobility PIP you claim or Standard Mobility? If it's Standard then this will only get you a 50% reduction. Why have you left it so long before claiming this?

You won't get a refund. The car needs to have the VED class changed from PLG to Disabled. As you hadn't done this then it was liable for tax at the rate you were paying.

You are not exempt from VED, you are entitled to the Disabled class of VED which is £0 rated but the vehicle you tax has to be registered as disabled class which you can only do with the appropriate certificate from the DWP. I'm saying this so you remember you still have to renew the tax and won't get prosecuted or fined for driving an untaxed car. Even though it is £0 rated you still need to tax it and can be fined for an untaxed vehicle.
