what a fab thread well done everyone
I have a friend who makes all types of chutney and is wondering what to put on the top of her jars to decorate them
Usually she uses gingham material with ribbon or string and it looks lovely
But she is looking for something xmassy and different
Anyone got any ideas what she could do to make them different?

She could still use gingham but decorate with holly, or a tree ornament. Or she could place another cover of Christmas wrapping paper on top or use those Christmas printed cellophane bags that Lakeland & Poundland sell at that time. If she uses the lids, she could cut circles of fabric or giftwrap and glue those to the top. :)

hi, my local Asda (milton keynes) has a kilner style? jar for just £1 each. they are about 15cm tall i think would be ideal for journal jar or cookie jar? Unsure if other stores have them. And may i be cheeky and ask if anyone has a nice cookie in a jar receipe that is not in american cups? i am going to do a jar each for friends at work as been quite poorly this year and they have been great with visits/texts/ calls etc but cant afford expensive present as on SSP. Will do journal jar for sister, mum and best friend. They will be well chuffed if i can make them look as good as some of the pictures i have read and seen on this thread. Thanks in advance.

:D For friends of dogs & dog-lovers - have found this Dog Biscuit Mix recipe for layering in a jar http://mycountryhome.yuku.com/topic/21986

It would make a lovely present with a bone shaped cutter attached around the neck of the jar. Or one of those scottie shapes tied on with tartan ribbon - aaahh :)

you can use any of your own metric/imperial biscuit recipes. Depending on the size of your jar, you may have to double or half quantity of ingredients, say - just make sure that the recipe you give them to use, reflects that ;)

And point out that they have to add any egg, vanilla extract, butter etc. :)

Hi A.J. This is the recipe I used to do cookies in a jar as a Xmas gift for a group I go to. I used a 500ml jam jar (Sainsbury's mayo!) & it contained the following:

    6oz S.R. flour
    3oz brown sugar
    3oz granulated sugar
    A pinch of salt
    4oz of choc drops
    or 4oz dried fruit

The fruit was used in a couple of jars which were a bit bigger than the others as some people couldn't have chocolate. Here's the making instructions:

Preheat the oven to 180°C / gas mark 4
Put the following in a mixing bowl
    • 3oz softened butter or margarine
    • 1 beaten egg
    • 1 tsp of vanilla essence (optional)
Add the contents of the jar
Stir well until all ingredients mixed
Put spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet
(leave gaps as it does spread)
    Bake for about 12 mins

I got the recipe from somewhere else on the MSE website (thanks) & they are very nice can use things other than choc drops or fruit like nuts. I stuck the ingredients on the lid in case people wanted to make more (which they did!) & split the flour into 2 "layers" & used an unrefined granulated sugar as it's a golden colour, to give it more variety. Remember to put the choc drops at the top. Hope this helps.

I have a load of plums in my garden so I am going to make a plum and almond chutney for my grandad next weekend :-)

With the remainder - I'm giving to my mum to make plum wine!

Journal jar note pads - I had mine in tesco last year (with matching pens)

    Jo xx

Edited to add: Would anyone like me to send them a copy of the prompts I used last year? I made some suitable for my teenager sisters and for my Nan. If anyone would like them then PM me with your email address and I can email them - they are in a word document (all set out for printing)
