Mrsbudget,
Hope things work out well for you here. The golden rule is to never, ever buy any goods or services from anyone who knocks on your door trying to sell anything to you."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
There is some top advice in here, but don't hand over any money, report them straight away, any decent company would hand out leaflets, business cards, their trading certs etc, this is the oldest trick in the book!
Report to trading standards ASAP!What Happened To Summer!?

hi, all folks,.,
Thanks for the MoneySavingExpert.Com I did really learned a lot!! Guys, I'm still shaking and could not type properly but I just had an argument witht the man who we were dealing with.
To make the story a bit shorter (I'll try), he knocked the door this morning before 8.30am, children were having their breakfast, he said they are going to finish their work today. Mind you, yesterday, he knocked the door to tell me that he's finishing his job and he needs the money but when I said i dont have the money just yet, he said they would come back today to finish it. Anyway,he came with another guy to finish the work and I said ok. But I asked his mobile details and he gave me a peace of leaflet saying that's where he works. Then he asked again about the money if I could give it this afternoon but i said bank would not give the big cash amount. And he said I was lying because I said I would have some money, so I said, he was the one lying because he was not really working at the place where he told he was doing some jobs.
So the argument started, me who is only 4'7" tall and he who is over 6foot tall in front of our house. I told him that I have phoned the trading standard that I have the right to stop the working if i want to on my 7 days cooling of period since I didnt approach him that he was the one who approached us. Then he threatened me that he will dumped all the rubbish that he taken off from my driving ways if I dont even pay for the work they have started so, i said I was just calling the police and then i started taking pictures from my mobile phone which annoyed him more then he asked me what I was doing so I said in case you do somthing to my driveway then I have some evidence of him and he's plate number.
Peeps, every bit of my body was shaking I can tell you but I was determined I was going to win this fight. So, he was off but I can remember the last words he said was, I still want, they can finish the job properly if I want them to finish it,, and..how desperate these men are,,after a big argument they are still insisting that i want the work done...and yes, somthing else i remembered, he mentioned that police or trading standards could not reach him because he is a GYPSY!! He was asking me if I knew what gypsys are and if i dont I should read the papers..
Well, after that, my neighbours came and they calm me down and told me to phone the police which I did. The police came and I gave their descriptions and hopefully they wont come back anymore...
so guys,, if i dont have any posts anymore, something happened to me!!
Thanks everyone, even it was really frightening, I feel proud of myself and stand on my own and deal with some bogus scary people.:T0 -
Hi, everyone, thanks for all your concerns and time to share your thoughts. Yes, I didnt realise how vulnerable I can be, I really feel so stupid that I fell for this scam.
Anyway, so far, the whole day yesterday, nobody came and now, it's a nice day and no sign of them yet. For me, it would be better if they dont come anymore which I doubt it, because they will want their money for what they've started doing.
Thanks "deanos" , got this site already..
Antilles, I dont think any reputable company would be willing to inspect it at this time because they will not gain from looking at it, although I could phone the Trading Standard if they can do that for me. Am not sure if they will do it though.
Thanks to all of you, I will update you with what's happening..and just to make clear, I havent handed any money at this stage yet..(thnks goodness for that:-)
If you contact your local council's planning department they will be able to help you with an inspection0 -
Aw mrsbudget, i'm so sorry you had to go through that. You did well though!0

Yay! One for the good guys.
Well done you!more dollar$ than sense0 -
Hurray! A big congratulations to you for standing up for your rights and not letting these cowboys get away with your hard earned cash for shoddy work!!
At least you have lots of evidence, and don't forget to get a professional to take a look at it just to see how badly they layed it!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Woohoo mrsbudget, you Go Girl !!
That was very brave. It must have been very frightening for you and you should be extremely proud of yourself.
I hate gypsies, well !!!!!! anyway (usually Irish), after they stole our brand new £16,000 caravan three days before we were due to go on holiday to France in it.  Scumbags!
There are good gypsys but they are in the minority.
I suspect you have seen the last of this lot as they know you have pictures of them etc. so I shouldn't be too worried. Anyway, even if they do dump the rubbish back on your drive, consider you have gotten off lightly. You can always clear it up.
Well done sweetie.:T
Take care0 -
Can I just add that Trading Standards do get some of the 'gypsies' so he's not quite right when he says he can't be caught! Well done mrsbudget - you were very brave.0

Dodgy gypsies can move to another area very quickly, so its unlikely they'll ever be caught.
Well done Mrs Budget, was a very brave thing to do, I just hope they haven't left your driveway in too much of a state! What Happened To Summer!?
