USB-C chargers

Options
Hello all, I'm going to buy my first phone that charges with USB-C.

I'm getting it from China, I've seen an unboxing vid showing the phone comes with a "PE+ Quick Charger" charger adapter and separate usb-c to usb cable.

They may be nice and put a UK charger in but I suspect it'll have a 2 pin charger.

Not a showstopper, I can use an international power adapter or just use the USB cable in my laptop to charge, but is there any reason why I can't use one of the 3 pin to USB plugs I've accumulated for my old phones that charge with micro-USB? Is there anything special about USB-C?

Thanks :)

You can use any charger / USB socket if it has the correct voltage for your phone, I picked up a spare USB to USB C in Maplin to use in my car

Be careful - it's not as straight forward as it might seem. USB C is, in theory, compatible with previous USB standards although the charge rate will be much slower Vs using a proper USB C charger.

There are possible problems if any of your chargers use non-standard quick charge technology as any confusion caused by incompatible standards could, again in theory, cause the phone to be presented with the wrong voltage or the charger could be overloaded.

In reality you probably be ok but charging will be slow. You can get a decent Microsoft USB C charger for around £10 which is money well spent IMO.

Thank you both. I don't think any of my existing chargers have any kind of quick charge technology - e.g. the one I use at the moment shows it outputs 2A 5V.

    I'm assuming 'PE+' means Mediatek PumpExpress+.

I'll probably use the charger that comes with the phone + international adapter as the main charger, the 2A/5V one as secondary, and laptop USB to phone to top up.

Does that ring any alarm bells?

Can't see why that shouldn't work. I tend to use the charger that came with the phone most of the time - it shows as 'fast charging'
But as I had several other 3 pin usb chargers from other devices, I have those in various places, plus I also have a mains socket with integrated usb charger, and just use usb to usb C leads from ebay. although the 99p ones seem to break quickly at the plugs, so I have resorted to paying more for OEM ones

As said. Go with a charger that will give the grunt for USB C fast charging.
    I have run a a Nexus 6P for nearly 2 years and just got a Note 8.
Wouldnt go back to ye olde usb.
I dont need to charge over night. A top up in the morning, maybe an odd charge in the car.
  • Check the ampere output as on mine it is 3.5amps, on my Samsung S6 its a 2amp output. As my new one is Quickcharge 3, you need to look for a matching charger output to yours, which may be the same. There are a few on Ebay but just check to be sure

Are you saying that if my new phone's charger outputs 3.5A it won't work if I take an existing UK 3 pin plug that outputs say 1.5A to an old USB-A socket and connect my phone with a USB A to USB C cable?

My Elephone charger is 3A, but it charges just fine off a 2A USB-A adapter with the appropriate cable. I can't be certain, but I imagine it would charge from one of my 0.5A adapters, if I had the patience.

Thanks, I'm trying to work out what tomthered's post meant, it doesn't really make any sense to me.
