Nokia 105. USA.

Hi,

I'm guessing this is a long shot, but I'll ask the question anyway;

My daughters arrived in Orlando yesterday for a holiday. Last week I bought them each a Nokia 105 so that they could get in touch with each other should they get separated. They've both got iPhones but the batteries are rubbish and unlikely to last long enough to be relied upon. I got the phones from Carphone Warehouse and was assured that they would work in the USA. My daughters have told my via Skype that they can't get either of the phones to work.

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of these Nokia phones or an idea of what the problem might be.

Thank you in advance.

    A quick google should have shown you they are incompatible for US use.

    It’s a 2G GSM only handset, and only works on GSM 900/1800, there is a separate 850/1900 model for the US which is presumably sold in the US but your European model won’t work there.

    Not to mention the US is turning of 2G in many regions so any 2G only handset could struggle.

    Get them to put their sims back into a decent multi-band phone that can operate on US frequencies (like their iPhone) and get them to turn off Mobile Data if that’s the reason you gave them the useless old 2G phones ;).

    Never believe what you are told by a CPW salesman, particularly if it relates to their chances of making a sale. Ideally, never enter such a shop.

    As said, those devices would not work in the US. Have them put their sims back in their iphones if they have those with them. Plus, there is free Wi-Fi in most places, so they may be able to make do with that. It's correct that 2G is barely going to work in the US. AT&T has totally shut down their 2G network.

    If they don't have their iPhones, most drug stores (or Target/Walmart) sell 'burner' phone for around 10 bucks. None smart ect but enough to make a call.

    You would also have needed to activate roaming on their SIM Cards unless they have bought local ones.
