Disposing of food waste

How does everyone dispose of their food waste? We have a black wheelie bin for general waste, and we usually triple bag food waste (in old Sainsbury's carrier bags), then into a dog poo bag then put it into the black bin. But, even in normal weather (non heatwave) there's flies around d the bin within a day or 2...
It's not even loads of food just scraps off the plates and chicken carcasses etc
Any suggestions please as it's driving us mad

We have a good carry on our kitchen window sill. When full emptied into our garden waste bin which is only put out when the grass has been cut so can be several weeks. Never any problems with flies etc so can't understand why you're getting themLost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I haven't noticed many flies this year, and I am not as careful as you when putting food in the black bin.

Having moved house just over a year ago the one thing from our old house that we REALLY miss is our Tweeny waste disposal unit. Virtually everything used to go down there, food scraps, tea bags, carcass bones, veg' peelings and when we moved it seemed really alien to be putting food scraps etc into a bin.
As soon as I get around to it we'll be getting another Tweeny as once you've had one it's hard to live without it.0 -
My food waste goes in a black plastic sack tied up with string and then into the wheelie bin with the lid shut.
If you handle the bags carefully and avoid splitting them, there's no way anything can get out, so nothing that could attract flies. And touch wood I've never had any fly problems.
If you're getting flies I'd assume that either your bags are leaking and letting stuff out or flies in, or the bin is dirty and needs a clean.0 -
Insinkerator unit - wouldn't be without one now, particularly as we get waste collection only every 2 weeks now (and then only if the driver bothers to turn up which he doesn't always!).0

Our local council has a weekly food recycle collection. I have a caddy in the kitchen which is lined with a recycle food waste bag. Once the bag becomes full, I pop it into my food waste bin which is jept outside of the property, out back. the day before food collection day, I simply put the food bin outside ready to be collected.Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!0

It just goes in the wheelie bin, no wrapping, collected fortnightly, no flies.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Same here, but I don't put food waste out for collection - It goes on the compost heap along with the kitty litter & grass clippings.
My kitty litter is wood shavings & sawdust, so will compost just fine.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
All councils ought to be collecting and composting food waste by now. Sticking it in a waste disposal unit is doubly wasteful.
We get a weekly collection for food waste. As I compost anyway, I usually put out stuff I'd not put in the heap, like bones, other meat waste or tea bags, so mine only goes out every 2 weeks. I suppose the caddy smells a bit, but no flies get in and I sluice it out every fortnight.
EDIT: If you are having problems with meat waste etc maybe look into bokashi bins. Not something I have experience of, but I know some people like them.0 -
Most of mine goes into the wormery.0
