It just goes in the wheelie bin, no wrapping, collected fortnightly, no flies.

I suppose it depends which county (?) you live in.

With us we have black bin (non-recyclable) one week and green bin (garden and food) and cardboard, glass, plastic the other week. I think there is also a food caddy bin which we have never used
We have no real fly problem, apart from the neighbouring farm.

In Gwynedd, N Wales, they are now charging for garden waste collection  so everyone just puts it in their 'landfill' bin (which is actually green in colour, just to confuse all the holidaymakers!!!

I'm amazed that not all councils collect food waste. We've had it for 15 years at least. I've always composted as much as possible myself, but cooked stuff gets collected and used to generate power.
Where do you live out of interest?
  • If the dogs don't eat it then it goes in the compost bin.

    I don't buy compost anymore :)

I have one of these bad boys under the sink http://www.tweeny.co.uk/product/mayfair/ and once you have one you never have to handle leftovers again.

Everything from the whole chicken bones to the teabags are liquidated in seconds.

There are other models and brands as I was looking for one on Ebay and got a brand new one for a quarter of the new price so no need to spend a fortune. The better the motor the easier it chews up the bones though if you eat a lot of chops etc.

    £423 :o

Like others I use the food waste service from the council - collected weekly. Those that don't yet have this should be pestering their councils to provide the service.

Bit of an overkill on the wrapping.
supermarket bags are no good(and 5p each) as they have holes in.

if you are getting maggots the food has been exposed for too long

To avoid flies getting to the food and laying keep the food sealed.
just a few minutes even in the house can get eggs laid.

once in the bin make sure the bin is sealed so no flies can get in.

    keep the bin clean.

do you have other problems like cat poo that attract flies.

My wife makes it disappear somewhere.
  • Anything veggie goes into colander on draining board. I try to empty this daily. If I forget, the fruit flies remind me. Must be raw stuff though, or you can end up with rats in your compost bin.

Scraps of cooked food and bones get wrapped up and put in a recycled cereal bag in the freezer. This goes out with the bin rubbish as late as possible the night before our 7.30am collection.

'Bloody' meat wrappers go in the sink next to the bowl then get quick dip in washing-up water so they are cleanish before going in kitchen bin. Packaging from raw chicken gets washed in bleachy water along with dishcloth when chicken has been put on to cook.

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

If it really bothers you then just either bag it and throw it in the freezer until bin day, or have a large plastic box in the freezer and scrape everything into it - then put out on bin day.

I chuck mine out for the fox - anything meaty that is.

I don't tend to have very much food waste at all, and if I do, I leave it in the fridge sealed until bin day and then chuck it out.
