Plusnet - moving house fees fees fees!

Just wondering what other people's experiences are with plusnet and moving house. Im just about to come out of contract with plusnet but moving house in 2 months time.

They're not being very clear with the charges that will be incurred. I've been informed that if I close my account at the end of my contract, there will be a cease line fee of around £30 which is unavoidable.

If I want to transfer my account over to the new property, there will be a transfer fee of £65 plus £49 line activation if the previous tenants have closed down their account and line (I assume this will be the case as who doesn't close down all accounts when they move out?!)

These fees will be waivered if I extend my current contract for a minimum 18 months.

However, the line activation fee will still stand if, as mentioned before, the previous tenants have closed down account and line. I was told that the only way to avoid this is 'catch' the line before the previous tenants have closed everything down. When I questioned how that is even possible when I have no idea when previous tenants will start to close accounts down (it could be a month before their move out date for all I know).

This is where it gets very sketchy indeed as I was advised the only way to do this is initialise the transfer a month or so before the tenants move out / my actual move in date. And even then they can't guarantee this would avoid the fee.

Is this even legal?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone else who has moved with Plusnet.

  • Hi,

mmm, that seems to be about right, though I'll agree, seems a bit stiff.

    Here are FAQ's regarding moving.
  • Thanks frugalmacdugal,

What seems to be a grey area is the reconnection charge - they did check the new postcode and informed me there was an active line. But does it stay active when previous tenants close their accounts down?
  • Hi,

    sorry, can't help.

Do you have phone and broadband, you could try the, 'I thinking of leaving', see if they'll give you a deal, but if you have to pay the cease line fee anyway, maybe you should shop around for a new deal elsewhere.

You do a deal at the new property with any ISP as a new customer .
You are out of contract so can just continue for the next two months on standard 30 days notice contract .
