Old Travellers Cheques

Hi - I took my old travellers cheques into a branch of Lloyds last week. I signed the travellers cheques (US Dollars) which were issued in 1998/1999 in front of the person serving me. She accepted them and transferred the money to my bank account there and then.

Three days later I receive a phone call to be told that this transaction has been cancelled and they have taken the money back. So basically taking the money back out of my account and I have to go back to the branch and collect these 'signed' travellers cheques.

They would have originally been issued by Lloyds as I have banked with them for many many years.

I would like some advice on...

1) where do I stand, they initially accepted the travellers cheques and the money was paid into my account? Surely if there was any hesitation on their part if these would be accepted they should have checked etc first.

2) how on earth am I going to get these cashed in now as they have already been 'signed'?

As mentioned, these are old travellers cheques but there is no reason why they are not still valid. Before I am given any friendly advice about 'why on earth did I buy travellers cheques etc' - back then it was the done thing, safest way to carry money and they were purchased for my first holiday abroad.

I cannot afford to just let this go.

Thanks in advance

What reason did Lloyds give you for refusing to cash them?

If they had previously been reported as lost or stolen, then this would not have been something the counter clerk would have known when accepting the payment into your bank account. This would have been picked up during the processing.

Given the age of them are you sure that they were not reported as being misplaced and the cheques replaced by Lloyds at some point in the past 18-19 years?

As Dj1471 asks, what reason did Lloyds give you?

What is the branding on these TCs? Is it one of the major issuers or something Lloyds only sold themselves?
