Hi - my son has been given a Nokia smart phone. I want to get a sim to allow him to use it for calls and texts on wifi only, so no monthly top ups etc. I don't mind paying a small amount initially for the sim if I have to and I will turn the mobile data off. Is there a way to prevent him using any credit on the phone for calls? In an ideal world I just want a mobile number and a sim that can't be topped up! Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you get him a PAYG sim he will very quickly learn that it runs out after a few days of chating when out and about

Once it has run out after a few days and he does not get a free top up he will soon get wise, and have no option but to use Wi Fi only. Unless he tops it up out of his own pocketof course

Your choice as to amount on PAYG, you can get a fiver to start, and once it has gone it has gone

You will have to use the paid call option every 3 months or so jsut to keep it live

Asda have free sim, online, comes with about 10 texts on it as a starter

Even better, he may learn that if he wants to talk on it, he'll need to earn some money to add as credit.

Why do you need a sim for wifi only?

well I don't know if you are tight or hard up, but I would have thought you could afford £5 a month for a sim only deal for your son to be able to make emergency calls/txt to you and to be like the other kids a use the phone.

I believe tesco do capped tarriffs. (o2 network)

First think to do in understand if the phone is locked and what network the previous owner was using.

you can order free sims from the main providers to test if its locked

I'm confident in saying that there are no SIMs that cannot be topped up.
  • Can you even make calls and text on wifi?

Probably thinking of using something like WhatsApp for calls and messages.

I don't think it would be very practical though, as would still need a SIM which will involve some outlay. So you would be better going for a capped SIM only or PAYG bundle with a bit of data.
