I saw it. Despite what I allready know about shopping for value foods, for anyone who's never done this, I think it was a good way of showing the difference which can be saved!

I missed the last 10mins of it, so only saw up to the part where the family ate 7 different meals, both cooked value & branded labels! That was really interesting to hear the result!

Its amazing what the package actually does to one's temptation when shopping!

Enjoyed the programme - don't know if the family were a set-up though!

I've been doing this 'downshift' thing for years - though it's much easier now that the children are grown-up and flown the coop! I've got certain things that I absolutely WON'T compromise on (coffee being one of them!) but apart from that there is very little branded stuff in my shopping trolley these days - unless I can't find an 'own label' version.

I do think it's true that we are brought up (at least MY generation was) with brand loyalty towards whatever our parents used. It's usually a necessity for money-saving that makes us look at cheaper brands/own labels. However, I have to say that the majority of own labels really are as good as the branded stuff and in some cases the economy label is as good too. eg I actually prefer Asda Smartprice Baked Beans over Heinz as I find that the sauce on Heinz is way too thick and sweet - on the other hand I don't like the Smartprice tinned spaghetti but find the Asda own brand spaghetti is good - it's swings and roundabouts. You find out what you are prepared to downshift to and go with that.

Like Martin said, buy one thing to try out. If you don't like it, then you've only wasted coppers - and not an entire shop!!!
  • I watched it and thought it was fab. I LOVE that man!!! It was nothing i didn't know and practice, but still nice to watch Martin showing a family how to save money. One thing though, she still spent £120 a week!! doh!! We are a family of 6 two cats and a dog and we shop and eat comfortably for £60. Let me at that woman!!!!lol

I saw the start just before I went to Tesco and set it to record. I did smile to myself as I put Heinz tomato soup in my basket as thats one thing I wouldn't compromise on :)

Loved the programme. Wish things like that were on every week! I found it slightly strange that a girl of that age would be so adamant that she would not even try a different shampoo!!! Mind you myself and my son have always been bargain hunters.:)

I was more suprised that a girl of 12 would still scream like that! I thought she'd transgressed into a toddler!

I missed it. Does anyone know if its going to be repeated again on ITV1 or ITV2 at some point this week?
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

I don't know what the programme was called, but for anyone who does, you can look it up on TV GENIUS it only works up to 10 days ahead, so if it doesn't throw up any results at first, a weekly check will make sure you don't miss repeats (if any)

I watched it - I thought it was good but as you say those of us on these forums probably do that anyway. Mind you my shopping bill is still large, I think that may have to do with buying some things at M & S and with adding in a bottle of wine and sweeties every week - must give those up.
