New gutters burst twice in a year

Hi

Just after some advice please. Had gutters, fascias and soffits replaced last year. One of the joints on the front gutter came away around 6 months after the fitting, and rain started to pour down the house below. Contacted the fitter who came out and fixed the issue.

4 months later the gutter has come away in exactly the same spot and the rain is flooding down the house again.

The gutters were replaced less than 12 months ago, so contacted the fitter again. This time he said there was likely to be a charge as the gutters should be cleaned every 6 months, otherwise apparently the pressure of debris will cause the joint to burst.

Anyone come across that before? Call my cynical but I've had plenty of houses and never came across this 'pressure of debris' thing before, and I've certainly not had gutters cleaned every 6 months.

    Utter cobblers!

Plastic (presumably) is expanding and contracting and then slipping out of the joint, easy to fix for someone who knows their trade.

Excuses are just that, no reason this should happen if the correct lengths are used in the first place.

  • I had gutters cleaned recently. The guy said it is usually recommended to clean them once a year but he has many customers who do it every two years and they are fine too.

What pressure? They're open, if they get blocked water pours over top!

I have yet to see a gutter, fascia and soffit job that has been done correctly. I have looked at many and they are all defective. Indeed, the standards are so abysmal I remain mystified why consumers request the work be done. I keep thinking "when will they learn?" With this in mind it is likely OP's gutters are the same as all those I have seen. In a word, bodged.

I have not cleaned my gutters in <mumble><mumble> years, and have never had a joint burst.

The usual bodge is that the fitters don't remove all the existing fascias and soffits. They mount the new stuff onto the existing rotten surface and then of course the gutters fail as the wood continues to decay.

  • I fitted new plastic guttering myself without any specialist knowledge. I made sure it ran downhill to the downpipes and as yet it hasn't clogged and nothing has burst. Since I live in a bungalow I can easily check (ease of exterior maintenance is one of the reasons I bought a bungalow).

The old guttering was a bit rubbish and I used these things called hedgehogs to stop it clogging up, they were effective.

Well, I bought my house 10 years ago, never even thought about cleaning the gutters, then about 5 years ago I saw that the house opposite was having theirs cleaned, so I went over and asked the guy if he would do mine while he was around. 20 minutes later he knocked on the door and said he had checked both front and back gutters, both were fine, no charge. Result.

I know it's not helpful to say this, but I think that was your main mistake. The chances of all these needing replaced are probably below the chances of you being the victim of a hard-sell for needless work. This is then compounded by companies that think they can get away with inferior work if it is in part of the building that you can't easily inspect. When it all goes wrong, you get the story that it was all your fault for not doing some apparently vital piece of maintenance.

I feel for you, but I would ditch the company and get a decent, self-employed, local handyman in to fix it.
