Good for building your credibility by wafting your Amex card in public so everyone gets a glance of it but that's about it.

Yep, when I was doing business in Taiwan and paid for stuff using an Amex Platinum, I got considerable qudos from wafting. And at a cheaper price than staying in a top hotel or flying business class etc. That was in the early 1990s. My 22 year old assistant had a gold card on my account - she wowed her friends with it and loved using it in the shops.

But with chip'n'pin, wafting takes more of an effort - and with the proliferation of cards of different colours and Amex itself becoming more widely available, the waft effect is somewhat diminished.

Now I'm older, I waft platinum hair..

That's exactly what I've read, although it was caveated as a 'general rule', whatever that means.

2x Credit and 2x Charge is indeed generally quoted, however when I lived in the UK the most I had at any one time was 2x charge (Platinum and PRG) and 3x credit (BA, Platinum Cashback and Gold Rewards), so it's certainly not a hard rule.

The final approval (Gold Rewards) was referred and manually approved, with a ridiculous limit (GBP 500!), so they clearly were on the verge of saying no! However, I was due to bin off the BA card anyway, so I called them to do that and they moved the limit over to the Gold, to make it somewhat more useful to me to keep it. Still have it now actually!

...The problem with Amex cards is that they suck big-time. No ATM cash advances unless you apply to join their cash advance program and forget about a balance transfer to your Amex even though the monthly interest rate for cash advances and balance transfers are shown on the statement.....

Whole heartedly disagree with them sucking though, other than occasional lack of acceptance, I've never had an issue, and the higher rewards earning means they're my first choice.

Yes, cash advance aren't always available, but they're not designed for that purpose and it's expensive to use that feature anyway (generally if someone is pulling cash from a credit card, they probably shouldn't be using a credit card, given the high fees and interest charges, with the exception of overseas travel, where certain cards are usually the best option, such as Halifax Clarity).

As Amex was originally a charge card operation (ignoring the fact that their original business was travellers cheques), they've never been marketed as excellent for a revolving balance, hence they don't force balance transfer offers through your mailbox every month (looking at you, Barclaycard!).

    Obviously YMMV, just my thoughts!

Yeah, no idea why anyone would want to withdraw cash on an Amex or do a balance transfer to Amex (from Amex is a different matter).

If you are thinking about withdrawing cash on an Amex, then either it's an emergency (all your other cards were stolen/forgotten, you're stuck in no-man's land with a cash machine that accepts Amex, someone actually has a gun to your head) and the charges are unimportant, or you are about to become bankrupt/commit suicide etc in which case you should really seek help rather than cash.

Bit of a bumpity bump here!!

Guys i've 4 accounts showing and thought i'd ask here before i approached Amex themselves.

    1) A light blue Express Rewards card that i'm reluctant to let go as it's discontinued but mine is good for another year. I think it's x3 points for supermarket spends

    2) 2x PR Gold cards....one i'm main account holder and the other is supplement to the wifes account. Both mine and my wifes have qualified for bonus.

    3) A Nectar card which we're currently working on!!

Now, somebody very kindly pointed me towards a ''companion card'' for the the PR Gold card which may (not guaranteed) spill another 5k points on a small spend and maybe worth a try!! I'm interested in trying this but not sure how Amex would view it as i've 4 cards showing, all credit cards, but only 3 are with me as main account holder??

I'm loathed at the moment to cash in the points on both me and my wifes account for vouchers on the Gold cards but on the other hand we're not planning any long haul flights in the near future but believe the Avios could still prove useful on some Economy European flights?? Think i need to decide as that would free up 2 spaces in both me and my wifes account to move forward??

I’ve got 2 amex credit cards. Ba and Platinum rewards and a charge card.
  • Is there a limit to earning introductory offers?

Not that i know of!! I'm only back to using them after using another card for a few years. Aa far as i'm aware you get intro offer, use it and then close/cancel card and wait 6 months to do the same offer. Some people seem to have been doing it for yonks!! There are quite a few different types of rewards to keep you going though and this is where the 6 month rule applies....e.g. Member Rewards Points, Nectar Points, Avios points are 3 i have done!!!

ps-apologies as i haven't done the dedicated Avios one yet. The 3 i have balances for are MR Express, Normal MR and Nectar points.
