I am considering an upgrade in the coming months and looking to get some advice. From my research, the 7 looks rather similar to the 6 in many ways and I can't see good enough reason to be locked down to it for 2 years. Obvious bugbare is the pathetic battery life, so am considering the 6 plus as I have read that this offers a much better battery life (presumably owing to its size).

Any thoughts appreciated.

Not sure why you have this impression, the 6, 6S and 7 are all virtually identical in size. Are you confusing the 'S' suffix with the 'Plus' suffix?

The 6S is a better phone than the 6 (better specs, 3D touch etc). The 7 has better specs than the 6S but lacks a headphone socket, which may or may not be important to you.
  • GSMArena rate the 7 and 6s battery life to be almost identical,
I have the 6s and whilst I rate the phone highly in many ways it's battery life isn't one of them. Most days I need to put it on the charger early evening and I know other users who have to do the same. If stellar battery performance is top of your list the 6s will probably disappoint, you could always use a battery case though!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Let me give you a real life scenario. In the last 3 weeks both my wife and eldest daughter have dropped their iphone 6's down the toilet, (don't ask how :().

Now guess what the iphone 7 has that the iphone 6 hasn't?

That's exactly what I've done, good spot! Thread title updated.

If you want a reasonably future proof phone the earliest you should consider is the 6s.

The older 1GB ram phones are likely to lose support long before the 2GB ram models.

  • I wouldn't consider the 6 or 6 Plus, 6S is the oldest device I would consider (I do own a 6S Plus). Even with the iPhone 8 and X announcement yesterday, the 6S will still (for now) be sold by Apple.

Yes, given the above advice re RAM and battery, I would not go below the 6s or 6s plus. I find the 6 to be an excellent phone so would be happy to upgrade to the s or s plus version, however I am concerned about committing to 24 months for a phone that may lose support in the near future. I just wonder if the 7/7plus is different enough to justify the additional cost/month.

I have a 7 Plus and won’t be upgrading, other than the “portrait light” mode there isn’t a huge difference between the 7 Plus and 8 Plus.

It was the first iPhone to get 3GB of ram and prior to the 8 Plus launching had been shown to be the most powerful chip in a current phone tested.
