  • www.aria.co.uk consistently have the cheapest TVs they are made by TECO we have 7 of the 32 inchers where I work and I paid more than the £329inc that they are asking for a 37 now. These rock bottom priced ones dont include all the bells and whistles of tvs 2 x the price so look carefully at what you are buying.
If you have Sky or Virgin tv already then ok as they sometimes dont have freeview etc
I personally have a Philips at home with enchanced hd upscaling for freeview etc and it is brilliant but it was more than twice the price and only 32 inches.

    Cheers for the heads up jon_c! I would either get a 32 or 37inch. I have a
PS3 and XBOX360, but also intend to use my laptop with HD media linked up to the TV. You really cant tell the difference on a smaller than 50inch HD TV?, never would have guessed. You have saved me quite alot of money here, thanx.

Just one more question. If two HD TVs have the same resolution (1080i) then why would the picture look worse on one (cheaper) than the other?

    Thanx again!
One reason for variation in image quality on sets with the same resolution might be the contrast, IE: Blacker blacks and whiter whites on the better sets.... so just think of them like a good all purpose washing powder I guess.

Also depending on your viewing area, a narrow viewing angle could deteriorate what you see.
Energy prices are rising fast so if you like my comment, thank me quickly so you can shut down your computer sooner..! And if you believe Al gore you'll be doing your bit for the planet

I can't believe there are 24fps DVD, do mean 30fps (or 29.94 or some such to be precise), the USA standard? 24fps is film but usually that is played at 25fps, you don't notice the slightly higher voices and shorter film time.

HD is a lot of hype at the moment. For one thing >750 is classed as HD yet that will give a worse image. Current TV is ~540 so for HD you want 1080 i.e. 1:2 pixel mapping. If you have 768 HD then you get 2:3 mapping which is fuzzier than SD, 1:1 mapping, so pointless!

IMO the quoted TV figures are generally pointless. SD is ok up to at least 42in in a normal setup. What you want to know is the number of colours or DAC bits. 8 bits gives 16 million colours but some screens don't even reach that so they dither to get finer colour resolution giving less pixel resolution. And 8 bits is low tech. 10 bits gives 1G colours and 12 bit gives 68G colours which sound a lot but when consider that 12 bit is only 4095:1 contrast ratio it doesn't sound so much (10 bit = 1024:1, 8bit = 256:1).

Great store for cheap high quality electricals. Should buy in a store for the cheapest deals.
  • www.teleland.co.uk are doing the hanspree 37" LCD TV for £449.95 including postage :TPLUS:T you get a wapping :beer:free 5 year guarantee with it too which in itself can cost well of 100 quid. I have one and it is fab. Paid a bit more for mine a few months ago but only about 45 quid. Delivery was quick too.

I tried to order a large LCD TV from Ebuyer a couple of months ago, but had such problems I gave up and ordered from Empiredirect instead.

After placing the order on the net and thinking all was well I received a text msg on my phone a few days later asking me to contact customer services. A couple of minutes later another one came telling me the order was cancelled.

After phoning them they said their 'security checks' had thrown something up, and I needed to email/ fax (an 0870) all this lot :

Passport / picture card of my UK Drivers License
A utility bill - Acceptable bills were only gas, water, electric or council tax.

No explanation was given, and as I was at my parents for the week without easy net access it was a major pain. The utilities were also in my partners name. My father was in hospital for a big heart operation, and the TV was a gift for him when recuperating, so that all got messed up.

Sorry to go off track but I remember them being so unhelpful about the whole matter, others might think twice about ordering from these people.
I've had no other problems with online ordering (which I do quite a lot of) and resent being asked to jump through rings of fire to buy a £300 TV.

In my mind it is worth paying a little for good customer service.
  • Hi, I would just like to refer to the original post, I have been warned not to buy a cheap T.V because of low resolution and poor picture quality and as the specifications mean very little to me  I don't know what is or is not a good quality picture! So is this T.V good...picture wise?

Any help would be greatfully appreciated, thanks! :T

PANEL PROTECTION WARRANTY FOR PLASMA/LCD SCREENS

(not to be confused with Supercare)
Richer Sounds is offering on all plasmas and LCDs a comprehensive at home warranty at only 10% of the product purchase price. With all LCD TVs the warranty is for 5 years, with a 3 year warranty available for all plasmas.
This page is intended to demonstrate the incredible value of our Panel Protection. Under recent legislation, we are obliged to point out that you obviously do not need to purchase an extended warranty at the same time you purchase your electrical goods and are entitled to shop around. We have been encouraging our customers to do just that for years because, not only are our prices significantly cheaper than our competitors, but…
just look at what else we include:

    Full parts and labour cover
If your unit goes wrong we'll fix it. No quibbles and no fuss.
Pick up and drop off at your home
Carting a screen around can be a tricky business. To save you any unnecessary hassle, should your screen need repairing, we'll pick it up from your home and return it as soon as it's ready. (LCD under 32" return to store)
Like for like machine replacement if unit is unrepairable
If, for any reason, we are unable to repair your unit, we'll replace it. Naturally, models do change so, while we can't guarantee that it will be the same model, we do guarantee that it will have equivalent specifications.
    45 Day Cooling Off Period
If you're not happy with our Panel Protection package just ask for a full refund - no questions asked. After 45 days, providing no claim has been made, you can also terminate the agreement and receive a pro-rata refund.
We're confident our extended guarantee is the best value package available. It is less than a quarter of the price of those sold by some of our competitors and, when compared with the cost of replacing the screen, we're sure you'll agree, our cover is sensational value for money. For full details please ask a member of staff.
    Excludes:
    • Dead pixels within manufacturers tolerances
    • Screen burn
    • Accidental damage and misuse
    • Commercial use on commercial premises
A smile and manners doesnt cost any thing
