Yes, I traded mine in before I had the more expensive service done

I have a local independent merc specialist not far away. A friend of mine always takes his motor to them and gets good service. They are well reviewed and recommended.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Unfortunately there is no oil to VW505.01 spec in the Halfords new year sales. The prices I have quoted are for our smaller runaround car.

Come on tell us what car it is.

I'm surprised that you managed to get any parts at all to service your car if you always this cryptic when someone asks what it is!.

But i agree with AdrianC that it is probably a Ford Fiesta.

All Tesco stores are the same company.
Not all <brand> dealers are the same company. Very few are actually owned/run by <brand>'s manufacturer/importer.

The manufacturer/importer will have a standard book time for each specific job, and a standard price for each specific part. Individual dealers set their hourly labour rate, and may offer a discount on the parts prices.

    Are you sure on that?

Tesco use a very complex corporation structure in order to avoid its tax liabilities which involves dozens of different companies but all under the Tesco brand. IIRC (was 10+ years ago they did a expose on it), this was part of the reason behind the Tesco Metro, Tesco Superstore etc having different names despite all being tesco stores - they're all assigned to different groups for tax purposes.

However, the competition act is not designed to stop companies under the same brand/umbrella from setting the same price across all of its companies under that brand. Its designed to stop entirely different companies colluding to set a "industry standard" (rather than a company/brand standard) which is detrimental to consumers - like what the energy companies were caught doing so they could claim their massive price hikes were "standard".

    Cool story, bro....

I think we have 2 money saving ideas here. Mine is to complete a major service on a standard car for £50 using techniques such as buying oil in the annual Halfords sale.
Mercdriver recommends trading your car in every time it needs a service. It is up to readers of the forum to make up their minds which is the best money saving idea.

Where did I recommend that as a moneysaving tip? I challenge you to find it, as I didn't. I merely timed my change of car to be before the major service was due. If I waited til after, I would either been out of pocket for the service or got a lower part ex due to it being overdue a service. Changing cars is rarely if ever a moneysaving action. I changed for practicality reasons.

Keep servicing your sweeping brush for your sweeping statements...
  • Sorry, would probably read better as 2nd year service. Had its first one at 12 months old, now due its second at 2 years old.
