TV in New Build property

34 Posts

Hi All,
I have recently moved into a new build property. The property has external wiring on the outside for aerials and additional wiring left in the loft of the property.
I had booked to have SKY Q installed but they are unable to do this currently as there is no active Internet connection. I am looking to resolve this ASAP but at this stage do not know how long it will take as the property has an openreach box in the house already so I am chasing openreach directly to find out.
If it will take a while I will obviously have no TV unless I get a normal aerial. My question is: If I were to have a normal aerial installed so I pick up freeview etc would I then need a second aerial if I were to get Sky at a later date when the internet is up and running? Or is there a way of having a digital aerial installed for freeview which could then also be used for SKY so only one dish is needed on the house?
Ideally I will just wait for the internet to live and go with SKY but if its 2-3 months may be a problem.
Hopefully this makes sense.
Thanks

You actually answered your own question there.
Freeview uses a digital aerial while satellite uses a dish. Sky will install the dish when you subscribe.
But if the internet cannot be connected for a while for Sky. In the meantime I would require an aerial for Freeview and then a dish at a later date for Sky meaning I would have both an aerial and a dish on the outside of the property?
Yes, but you may get away with just a loft aerial for your Freeview, if the signal strength is strong enough.
Or even an internal set top aerial if they're really, really lucky.
a much bigger hammer.
Alternatively (which is what I did) was to use a Netgear one, then you don't have all that "BT Wifi Fon" rubbish.
You are very limited on broadband providers if you have fibre to premises. Only choices are BT, Zen and AAISP. BT was the cheapest even without discounts.
Make sure you get the latest offers if you go to BT. Their "buy online" didn't work for me since there is something about FTP connections automatically going through the purchase process but I got, after much trouble, them to match the online offers.
