I think you may have incurred problems by not having it serviced. Too many people buy cars without thinking about a budget for servicing and maintenance. How long have you had the car? This does not sound great, TBH -

Sorry to bring you down to earth, but cars do need regular servicing, or small problems tend to develop into major faults. When you bought it, was there a Service History with it? Is there a manual or Service book in the dash? I know it's a 57 plate and threfore about 10 years old, but if it had caring previous owners that may be a good sign.

As advised, ask friends and family for a garage recommendation. Remember also that an MOT is not an indication of the car's fitness for the road.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • Regarding your coolant problem, the check is free and you've already done it.

Top up with coolant and later the level drops. That means there's a fault.

Now you need to pay for a mechanic to do a proper investigation so you'll probably be the charged an hourly rate.

What is the fault? no one knows.
How long will it take to find the fault? no one knows.
I don't like morning people. Or mornings. Or people.
