That's a good point mum2one.

Check in the resort if you have to pay the tax on departure, and make sure you keep either pesos or US$ to one side to pay it.

If you don't, there is a very expensive cash machine in the airport that you will be forced to use, which isn't very :money: !!

caught your thread and just HAD to post. my hub and i went to the eldorado resort and spa on honeymoon in April and we've bleated on to anyone who'll listen since! it was quite simply the most amazing, wonderful resort. its quite secluded and between cancun and playa del carmen but the hotel do a free daily bus to each (about 30 mins) so you're perfectly placed to explore. to be honest thou, we didn't. we didn't want to leave the resort and there was so much to do (all included sports, jungle trekking, snorkle lessons, kayaks etc etc) that we easily filled a week. there are about 8 restaurants - all of them wonderful. the food, drink and service was amazing! with this resort you can either stay in the hotel or in the casitas section. the casita section is much quieter, more secluded and private. in fact, most days we had a whole section of beach to ourselves! but you can still use all the hotel section facilities.
i dont know what reaction you'd get to being same sex couple - the place is def geared to romance but groups of friends were also there. i'm sure you'd be fine but if you wanted to ensure more rpivacy i'd go for the casitas section - it costs abit more but its sooooo worth it!
also, we went with tradewinds but are returning next year and have found direct holidays to be the cheapest with a week starting at £800. check them out online.
if your thinking of the eldorado - all i can say is go for it. its amazing and even the brochure pics didnt do it justice. check out the reviews on trip finder - the resort has won awards, has gourmet status and is good value I think.

Glad to hear positive reports. It now looks as if we are going to Cancun and staying at either the Royal Solaris Caribe or the Riu Cancun. They look very similar, but the difference in cost is £100. Any ideas?

Can you visit other resorts for activities, or isn't there much of a point?

Will definitely check-out Ocean World. It's becoming a bit confusing looking at so many websites, so I think we'll stay with one company that does a number of different activities.

The Chitzun (sp?) Maya ruins are definitely on the list, as is one of the eco-parks.

I'm guessing shopping will be quite expensive in the malls? And we try to stay away from the tourist tat, is there any decent quality souvenir places you would recommend?

The Riu hotels are an amazing chain, when I wasin Tunisa last yr got talking to this lady who was staying at an iberostar hotel ( that was posh to where I stayed b4 in Tunisa), she absolutley rates Rui hotel chain, prefers them as they areout of this world.

at the rate your going you do realise that you are getting us all exicted about Mexico, were all be offering to carry your bags for you, just to get back there.

My daughter would be 1st in the queue, shes only 5, but has seen the photos and the video of the dolphin swim,and since shes spoke thats one of the things she wants to do, offered to take her to DomRep when shes older to do dolphin swim, not gd enough, mummy did Mexico 1st so thats where Im going. We now have a 50p tin on the go for her!! xx

I never got chanve to do the chitzun ruins, thou Ive been told its highly recommended.

Based on the exchange rate in 2001, which was 12 pesos to the £1.00, (thinks its about 18 now,) big mac meal was £9.00, polo shirt in Warner Brothers worked out at £65.00, tweety pie keyring £5.00. All anybody got for presents was a dolphin fridge magnet and sweets. Would highly recommend a trip to Walmart ( was the R2 bus) bout 30 mins away, stocked up on knick nacks including tequila to bring back.

£9.00 for a big mac meal (!!!!) Glad it's going to be all-inclusive then. I was initially apprehensive, but in the past when we have travelled, we have often spent the day exploring so many places that the last thing we feel like is locating a restaurant. It'll be nice to sit down and not go far in the evening.
